Cybersecurity breaches are now a daily reality, and the costs go beyond just financial loss. Legal fees, regulatory fines, and reputational damage can be catastrophic. Proactive risk management is no longer optional, it’s essential. Recent high-profile breaches highlight the consequences of negligence: -Ministry of Defence (2024): A breach through a third-party contractor exposed sensitive military data, proving the importance of securing your entire supply chain. -Dell Technologies (2024): 49 million customer records were compromised due to undetected system vulnerabilities, showing the need for proactive risk identification and mitigation. -National Public Data (2024): Personal data of 270 million users was exposed, demonstrating the dangers of poor digital footprint management. -FTSE 100 (2023–2024): Nearly all UK’s top companies faced supply chain-related cybersecurity risks, revealing that size doesn’t guarantee security. In March, 23andMe announced that it had filed for bankruptcy. Here are a few key takeaways from the situation: 🔹 Once valued at $6bn, the company never turned a profit. 🔹 A 2023 data breach exposed the personal information of nearly 7 million customers, severely damaging trust. 🔹 Despite a high-profile IPO in 2021 and strong endorsements, customer trust and business growth were difficult to sustain. In addition to the bankruptcy filing, 23andMe was handed a notice of intent that would see them fined $1.5 million by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for failing to safeguard customer data. March saw a surge in cyberattacks, with high-profile breaches making headlines globally.
