As the climate crisis bites, the world continues to heat up. This is particularly the case in cities where we see the urban heat island effect – affecting liveability, comfort, safety and productivity. The impact of the climate emergency on how we live in cities in undeniable. Development patterns in urban areas exacerbate and amplify heat. So, how did we get to the situation where urban living can feel so hot? And how can we adapt our behaviours and assets to create the most happy and healthy communities possible? Sabrina Bornstein, climate action and resilience lead for US Advisory at Buro Happold, said, “As with many problems, considering organised networks and systems that can respond to heatwaves is important. “There are a number of physical urban heat island mitigation strategies in cities – think things like cool pavements, cool roofs, tree planting and park areas, and more permeable/less grey surfaces. Passive design choices apply as much in the urban public realm as they do to individual buildings.” Here, learn about the current picture, crucial interventions, and how the built environment industry must break down silos to deliver effective solutions: https://buro.im/3GfWQWw #burohappold #engineering #consultancy #advisory #builtenvironment #construction #climate #cities #urbanheatisland #heatwave #heat

When major construction work needs to take place at an airport the scale of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), answering that need while keeping air traffic moving efficiently calls for truly unique and innovative solutions. We helped answer that need by planning and delivering a new terminal concourse using a segmented offsite construction and relocation (OCR) method. The concourse was transported to the site in just nine large-scale elements. Once the first element was relocated to the site, the assembly process began, with a segment moved every three days – meaning the whole element relocation and assembly process was wrapped up in about a month OCR allowed for a reduced construction schedule and increased sustainability, supporting circularity and reuse - it could be disassembled and moved to another part of the airport if required in the future, as well as easily deconstructed to enable the recycling and reuse of elements at the concourse’s end of life. Find out how Buro Happold, in partnership with Los Angeles World Airports and architects Woods Bagot, worked closely to design and plan the new Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) South at LAX: https://buro.im/4iZwd6t #BuroHappold #Consultancy #Engineering #BuiltEnvironment #MMC #OffsiteConstruction #OCR #ModularConstruction #Airport #Sustainability #Concourse #LAXAirport
