About us
The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) is the professional body representing the best zoos and aquariums in the UK and Ireland. We have more than 100 zoo and aquarium members whom we support in their commitment to be at the forefront of conservation, education and research. These days modern zoos and aquariums are much more than places where the public can go to view a range of animals. Whilst providing a safe and fun-filled family day out is something our members are understandably proud of, by displaying the BIAZA logo our zoos and aquariums are also demonstrating their dedication to conserving the natural world through research and conservation programmes and to educating and inspiring their visitors to do the same. BIAZA is a member of both the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and through this network our members collaborate on a global scale to further conservation science, natural history and environmental education and animal welfare.

Happy #InternationalBeaverDay 🦫 Times have changed since this keystone species was hunted to extinction in Britain 400 years ago; in 2019 they were granted European Protected Status. Since then, Five Sisters Zoo has partnered with Beaver Trust to become the country's hub for beaver translocation and research. This partnership has allowed them to successfully move over 250 beavers through their specially designed holding facility, where they receive a thorough health check from their expert veterinary team before being released at carefully selected sites across Britain 🩺 This collaboration has played an immense role in returning these ecosystem engineers to their former ranges! 🦫🌲 📷Five Sisters Zoo

Dudley Zoo & Castle has appointed Matthew Lewis as its new Zoo Director. Matt started at DZC as a 16-year-old trainee bird keeper and has worked his way up through the ranks 🐦 He has worked at DZC for almost 36 years, and will take over the running of the Castle Hill attraction following the upcoming retirement of Derek Grove next month. Matt said: “I’m really proud to have been given this opportunity and to continue what we have achieved here over the last decade. “I am well aware we have challenges ahead, particularly with rising costs, but there are plenty of plans in the pipeline as we continue our site development programme. I’m excited to get started." 📷DZC

Baby giraffe born at Flamingo Land Resort! 🦒✨ Keepers at Flamingo Land had an extra special reason to celebrate Mother’s Day 🌸 last Sunday morning Rothschild’s giraffe Savannah gave birth to her second calf, and the first born at the zoo for six years, as part of the breeding programme 🙌 The zoo now has eight Rothschild’s giraffes, however there could be more to come. Park Executive Ross Snipp explained “In total we have five females, all of whom we believe could be pregnant, we are certainly expecting more calves this year." "With less than 1400 reported in the wild every birth is a significant milestone.” 📷 Flamingo Land

🦎Bristol Zoo Project is working to restore forests in the mountains of Tanzania - one of the last strongholds of the Critically Endangered turquoise dwarf gecko. Over 70% of Tanzania’s Eastern Arc forests have been lost to illegal logging, wildfires, agriculture and mining, threatening over 150 species found only in the Uluguru mountains. That's why the Bristol Zoological Society team alongside local partners and communities are working to restore the biodiversity-rich forest 🌳🦎 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dzJvhdz 📷Bristol Zoo Project

It's #WorldCivetDay - a day to recognise a group of animals in dire need of awareness. This year's theme is coffee ☕and the practice of drinking from beans which have passed through the digestive tract of civets...to produce the world's most expensive cup of coffee 💸 Sadly civets, as well as binturong, are fed beans in low-welfare conditions, at risk of caffeine toxicity and worse. The Civet Project Foundationare aiming to end commercial civet farming and coffee consumerism. Multiple BIAZA members are also joining the cause in protecting these incredible species 🦝 Read more: https://ow.ly/yI2h50VtIhN 📷SHALDON WILDLIFE TRUST LIMITED, graphics: The Civet Project Foundation #WorldCivetDay #WorldCivetDay2025 #WCD2025
