I recently sat with an acquaintance who struggles with PME (Premenstrual Exacerbation), a core premenstrual disorder that worsens the symptoms of another disorder.
While we chatted about life and business in general, I mentioned Better You And Friends. This often comes up whenever I discuss mental health issues because this vision was born from my own personal struggles with mental health. She told me that she’d heard about our startup long before meeting me in person and was particularly intrigued by how we aim to incorporate community-led strategies into our product.
She shared her struggles with PME, how it has affected her social and work life, and how therapy, while helpful, isn’t quite meeting her needs. She expressed how much it would change her life to be surrounded by an intentional community of other women facing similar challenges in her local area. While her family and friends love and try to support her, there’s a unique relief that comes from knowing you are not alone and being with people who understand, without feeling the need to translate your soul.
This conversation was a much-needed encouragement for me and affirmed the necessity of Better You and Friends. We are not just building another mobile app for everyone to download. Our goal is to help people connect better.
Not just because of the post-COVID disconnection in the world or because our generation is weary, but because one of the biggest tricks your mind plays on you when you are struggling mentally is making you think you are alone and your struggles are unique. This is why many people don’t get adequate help from talk therapy; they often feel like the therapist doesn’t exactly understand their unique situation.
This often leads to isolation, adding an extra layer of loneliness to whatever mental struggles you are facing.
Our goal with our community-led strategy is to connect people better, to get you outside, to decrease the cold effects of loneliness, and to elevate your quality of life. This improvement will then ripple into various areas of your life, including parenting, work, marriage, and friendships.
Our ongoing crowdfunding campaign will help make this vision a reality. By getting involved with as little as £50 - less than what you might spend on takeouts this week - you are not only positioning yourself to benefit from a $380 billion global market but also becoming part of a movement that is redefining mental health support.
