We kicked off our 2025 cities series in #Birmingham today with ‘Let’s Talk West Midlands’. The events, in collaboration with British Property Federation, focus on the challenges and opportunities driving growth across the UK. Liverpool is home to a thriving business ecosystem and investment in the city region continues to grow, as companies switch on to its potential as a leading destination for innovation. Back in February, the world’s largest IT infrastructure provider, Kyndryl, announced a new technology hub set to create 1,000 jobs. And in March, Sciontec Developments Limited, the spin-out property development company of Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool), revealed plans to open a new urban technology building within the Knowledge Quarter innovation district. The city is also home to multiple universities, cutting-edge medical institutions and global technology companies. But it’s not only science and technology that’s attracting investment to the region. The city is also set to become the ‘Hollywood of the North’, as development gathers pace to transform the Littlewoods Building into industry-leading film and TV studio space. We are excited to kick off the first event in our ‘Let’s Talk’ series tomorrow in #Birmingham!

Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of chairing the 10th Anniversary Espresso Briefing, hosted by Avison Young │ UK on behalf of ACES. Titled "Keeping the Promise: Has the Elizabeth Line Delivered for Places?" the session considered the early progress (or lack of it) made against the regeneration benefits the line was predicted to bring. I'm hugely grateful to our expert panel of Mathieu Rogers (London Borough of Hillingdon), Sophie Beagles (Ealing Council (London Borough of Ealing)) and Marc Clark (London Borough of Redbridge)) for their time, insights and energy in exploring the different responses of places and markets across London. Reflecting on the session a few things struck me: 1. Transport improvements are not the sole arbiter of change. The world can quickly overtake even the best laid plans and predictions (note to self: never try and forecast market benefits the year of Brexit and 18 months before a global pandemic!) 2. Regeneration is complex and an alignment between landownership, investment, place-making, policy and political will are all vital to sit alongside new trains/stations! 3. In the main building buildings is the easy part - evolving the community and place is much harder and at present is lagging behind - in the future we need much stronger approaches to delivering non-property interventions earlier. 4. Ambition needs to be shared out equally - and potentially driven harder in places that are more challenging to deliver within to ensure no place is 'left behind' 5. Finally, we shouldn't be too downhearted that we haven't achieved everything already - we're only three years into a project that will last for generations - perhaps in our case making we need to reflect the long term nature of such projects and be more honest about the time horizon benefits will occur over. Lastly thank you to the amazing Lucy Godwin, Andrew Ewbank, Kate Murfitt and Neil Webster MA MRICS CMCS for making this happen. And, yes, there was cake!

One of the things that was especially great to see at MIPIM this year was the strength of the North East presence, across both the public and private sectors. Gordon Hewling, Managing Director of our Newcastle office, sat down with Anneliese Hutchinson of Gateshead Council and Place North's Sally Gibson to discuss the scale of the opportunity for the region.
