  • Last week, the Building Markets Türkiye team traveled to Syria on an exploratory visit to better understand how we can play a meaningful role in supporting local recovery. The aim was to assess current conditions, explore practical program opportunities, and identify where our presence could make a lasting impact for businesses and communities. Over several days, the team engaged with a wide range of actors — including government bodies, ministries, NGOs, and other institutions — to better understand the current landscape and explore potential entry points for future work. In the absence of updated data on the economic situation, local capacity and the overall business environment, the visit provided critical insights into the realities on the ground. It also underscored the need for programming that supports small businesses, strengthens local institutions, and responds to broader livelihood and recovery needs. These learnings will shape how we move forward in designing relevant and impactful support. Above all, the visit was a reminder of the resilience of people and communities — and the importance of standing alongside them in rebuilding what’s been lost. #BuildingMarkets #SmallBusinessBigImpact #damascus #syria #businessopportunities

  • "Social entrepreneurship" is a term gaining popularity — but what does it really mean, especially for refugee entrepreneurs in Türkiye? Social entrepreneurship blends business innovation with social impact — using entrepreneurial tools to tackle pressing social and environmental challenges. Türkiye, as host to the world’s largest refugee population , presents both opportunities and urgent needs for such models. Social enterprises have the potential to create jobs, strengthen community ties, and support inclusive economic development across both refugee and host communities. To understand how this model is perceived and practiced, we partnered with academic researchers to produce our new report: 📘 Social Entrepreneurship of Refugee-Owned Businesses in Türkiye. Through interviews and surveys with over 200 refugee entrepreneurs, the report explores: What social entrepreneurship means in practice How it is understood within refugee business communities What stands in the way — from legal barriers to limited support systems and lack of awareness The findings reveal a clear gap between growing interest in social entrepreneurship and its actual implementation — shaped by limited awareness, legal uncertainty, and a lack of support structures. Unlocking its full potential in Türkiye will require tailored training, a shared understanding of the concept, inclusive policies, and stronger partnerships across sectors to help refugee-owned businesses grow as engines of both economic opportunity and social impact. 👉 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/dwD7CyzC Samer Asleh Mona Labadi #BuildingMarkets #SmallBusinessBigImpact #socialentrepreneurship #inclusiveeconomy #businessdevelopment

  • When Lujain Al-Aoun arrived in Türkiye, she never imagined she would become a business owner. But when financial pressures grew, she turned a market gap into an opportunity. Starting with just a computer and printer, she built a home-based printing business, expanding into custom gifts and later laser cutting and engraving. Her journey hasn’t been easy—earthquake damage halted her work for months. But through mentorship with Building Markets, supported by Islamic Relief USA and guided by her mentor Dania Abusaleh, MBA, CPHQ, she gained the knowledge and confidence to rebuild and expand her business. With every challenge, she reinvested in herself, proving that guidance and determination are just as crucial as financial support. https://lnkd.in/ggBD8RHX Lujain Al-Aoun Türkiye'ye geldiğinde, bir işletme sahibi olacağını hiç hayal etmemişti.
