“Throughout my journey, I’ve had to navigate both corporate boardrooms and grassroots waste collection sites, two very different worlds that need to come together for real progress to happen. I strongly believe that leadership shouldn’t be just about making decisions from the top down; it’s about creating an ecosystem where businesses, communities, and policymakers work together to solve problems.” — Nanette Medved-Po In the Earth Month edition of Vogue Philippines, PCX Founder Nanette Medved-Po talks about the path that led her to build lasting solutions to plastic pollution. For her, real hope begins with systemic change—and a commitment to driving that change at scale. Plastic pollution is personal. Filipinos may unknowingly consume up to 5 grams of microplastic each week—the size of a credit card. It’s a wake-up call for stronger systems that keep plastic from leaking into nature. In this Freshly Brewed episode by BusinessMirror, the conversation dives into how companies can respond to the growing plastic waste crisis, with clear insights drawn from real-world experience implementing the Philippine Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law. Key takeaways from Rudi Ramin’s interview: 🔹 The EPR law is driving real accountability The EPR law mandates that companies with over ₱100M in assets recover 50% of their plastic footprint this year, scaling to 80% by 2028. With fines of up to ₱10M per violation, the law sets clear obligations and is already prompting action. 🔹 Some companies are choosing to go beyond compliance While EPR sets the baseline, leadership is emerging from companies that proactively shape recovery and circular systems. Through the Plastic Cleanup Partner program, companies like Mondelēz International have committed to recovering 100% of their plastic footprint over at least three years—demonstrating long-term engagement across sustainability, supply chain, and community impact. 🔹 Shared responsibility powers the system Plastic accountability works when everyone plays a role—producers, waste collectors, recyclers, and consumers. Building a functioning circular economy requires alignment and coordination across the value chain. 🔹 The Philippines is shaping the global conversation As momentum builds around the Global Plastics Treaty, the Philippine EPR model is being seen as a strong example of how developing countries can design enforceable laws that enable private sector participation. For sustainability teams and business leaders alike, this is a valuable look at what effective plastic responsibility can look like today. 📺 Watch the full video in the link below.

Are we fully aware of how nanoplastics impact our health? New research reveals that polystyrene nanoparticles in zebrafish impair red blood cell development, disrupting oxygen transport. Even without visible signs of damage, subtle changes like faster heart rates and altered growth were observed. These findings highlight the hidden dangers microplastics pose to living systems, raising concerns about their effects on environmental and human health. “For many developing countries, plastic pollution is a national security issue affecting human health, livelihoods, and food security,” said PCX Markets and PCX Solutions Founder Nanette Medved-Po at the Economist Impact’s recent event, Accelerating Plastics Circularity: Priorities and Progress Across Asia-Pacific, held in Bangkok. Highlighting the urgency, Nanette emphasized that the real challenge lies in the lack of circularity in current systems: “There’s very little circularity at the moment—about 9% of plastic produced has been recycled to date. If we don't do anything, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.” Drawing insights from the Philippines’ experience with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Nanette underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration and alignment beyond individual markets: “There’s nothing like regional or global alignment because there’s nothing businesses hate more than regulatory uncertainty… Solutions exist, but we need stakeholders to come together with resolve to implement them.” Economist Impact Economist Impact events #PCX
