🌟 We're improving the process of how we identify what needs fixing for our customers, one image at a time! A new AI tool is in action, analysing thousands, soon to be millions, of photos being taken of all the poles, wires, switches, and transformers that make up Auckland’s overhead power network. The benefit? An automated process that can detect asset condition, prioritise maintenance and schedule work, earlier and more efficiently. ➡️ 🔓 Read more on Energy News below (subscription required) https://lnkd.in/eR9Jfqik or check out a summary article on our website at: https://lnkd.in/gX-ze2hB #AI #technology #newenergyfuture #customer

Creating a new energy future
About us
We are New Zealand's largest distributor of electricity and gas, owning and operating networks which span the Auckland region. Our vision is to create a new energy future, by identifying and developing solutions that provide customers with value, choice and reliability. We haven’t been afraid to challenge the status quo. As leaders of the transformation of the energy sector, we know the ‘same old’ just won’t cut it. We have the confidence to forge new solutions and for our people to work differently, to think differently. We have collaborated with global technology companies and thought leaders who share our view that innovation and digitalisation are key to meeting the future needs of energy systems and fast-evolving customer demands. As governments, businesses and consumers urgently take action to decarbonise, at Vector we are clear on our vision – creating a new energy future.

In 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle devastated Tairāwhiti and Hawke’s Bay. What if it had tracked toward Auckland instead? 🌀 NIWA simulated five different cyclone paths to see what the impact could be, for Auckland Council, national grid operator Transpower New Zealand and energy company Vector Limited. Strong winds could have seen many fallen trees, while high storm surge could have resulted in erosion and damage, particularly along Auckland’s eastern coast. ⚠️ Climate change means severe weather events are becoming more frequent and more intense. This work helps Transpower and Vector find out where critical energy infrastructure might be impacted so they can better prepare and build resilience. NIWA is working on how this approach can be used in other locations across New Zealand – get in touch if you want to know more ➡️ enquiries@niwa.co.nz

We’re proud to help fund the Power Credits Scheme, which provides $1 million per year to help consumers experiencing energy hardship, and we’re pleased it’s been extended out to 2032. The fund will help those identified in the report as being most in need.
The phase-out of the Low Fixed Charge (LFC) regulations is a good thing for Aotearoa. The regulations were well-intentioned but ended up unfairly impacting large families and those living in poorly insulated homes. As we move toward a fairer system, there is support available for those most affected by the phase-out. 👉 The Power Credits Scheme — jointly funded by lines companies and large retailers — has now been extended through to 2032. It provides $1 million per year in targeted support for those most affected by the phase-out. This will be single-person households where the occupant is over 65, or has one of the lowest household incomes. On top of this, lines companies partner with more than 40 community organisations to offer on-the-ground help to anyone struggling to pay their bill. Support ranges from things like heat pump and thermal curtain installations to home energy advice and winter warming packs. ⚡ Electricity must be affordable for everyone in Aotearoa. As we head into winter and continue to invest in our networks to ensure reliability, it’s vital that the entire sector — including us — keeps affordability front and centre. Today, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment released a mid-point review of the LFC phase-out. It found that there are more winners than losers. ⚡How do we fix vital parts of Auckland’s electricity network trapped between bustling shops, historic buildings, and layers of concrete? This is the reality for Vector’s long-term programme to upgrade the Ring Main Units (RMUs) in the CBD. Many of the units were installed back in the 1950s and 60s and over time, as the city has grown, access points have been built over. While it’s a challenge, it’s one we’re fully committed to. Here you can see a large crane getting the job done – out with the old and in with the new! 💡We're planning to invest more than $100 million into the RMU replacement programme over the next ten years, which'll go a long way towards improving the safety and overall reliability of the network. 👷 Hats off to Eddie Marais and the team at Omexom (Electrix). #Auckland #Infrastructure #Challenges #NewEnergyFuture

Last week at DTECH 2025, our very own Shailesh Manga joined Amazon Web Services (AWS) to present on “Enabling Large-Scale Electrification While Managing Grid Resiliency.” With increasing electrification and the need for a resilient grid, finding scalable solutions is more important than ever. Thanks to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the opportunity to share insights and be part of the conversation. #DISTRIBUTECH2025 #EnergyTransition #DigitalInnovation

💡 A humble power pole in Auckland’s Maraetai is one of the first to be examined by a new AI that’s learning how to check the condition of our network, helping us prioritise what to fix for our customers first. This is the beginning of a revolution in how we look after the network. Every 2.5 years we’ll use helicopters and drones to capture more than 1 million images of all the poles, wires, switches and transformers that make up Auckland’s overhead power network. We’ll use AI and machine learning to assess these quickly, helping us prioritise where maintenance is most needed. We’re already at 2000 images and counting! https://lnkd.in/gX-ze2hB

🧡 Vector Lights is glowing up and showing up for the 300,000 Kiwis living with a rare disorder. There are over 7,000 rare disorders and half of those affected are children. It can feel isolating living with a disorder not many people understand, so we want to show our support and aroha for the rare disorder community. The sustainable lighting also marks the end of Rare Disorders Month in Aotearoa New Zealand. #GlowUpShowUp #RareDisordersMonth ✨ #vectorlights with Auckland Council and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | Rare Disorders NZ

❄️ Great conversations and information sharing. Always a good way to start the day! Last week, Chris Franks, our GM of data and analytics for networks, took to the stage to share Vector’s experience of building a Modern Data Platform (MDP) using Snowflake. He also talked about the progress of Vector's data transformation journey. The morning was wrapped up with a panel discussion on generative AI, led by Sophie Brown alongside Chris, Francis McGregor-Macdonald and Daniel Hein. 👏 So many interesting insights. Thanks to everyone involved at the Snowflake Data for Breakfast event. #data #innovation #newenergyfuture
