AI adoption is growing among NZ and Australian businesses, but cybersecurity could prove to be an Achilles’ heel. Around a quarter of 500 employees surveyed across both markets for a new State of Cybersecurity Index have read their organisation’s AI security policies. That’s at a time when security leaders see AI-based attacks as their top concern. "Like having an office in your pocket" is how one local government customer described our fieldwork tool. Wattle Range Council in South Australia is using Datascape Fieldwork to carry out critical fire prevention inspections more efficiently and accurately. After struggling with outdated tech and processes, fire prevention officers can now accurately conduct critical fire inspections in the field with ease and seamless communication. Wattle Range’s CEO Ben Gower says the Fieldwork app is not just a tool for operational efficiency, it also enables the team to make use of data to enhance customer experiences and measure council performance. "It builds trust between Council and the community, and it starts to inform your elected members about how efficiently the organisation is running, which is incredibly powerful." Our CISO Collin Penman joined CIO editorial director Cathy O'Sullivan to dig into the findings of our State of Cybersecurity Index 2025. The CIO Leadership Live session explores the findings on the disconnect between security leadership who believe most employees are well informed about cyber threats and their employees who are not so confident. Collin and Cathy also talk about growing concerns about AI-driven attacks and increasing levels of cyber fatigue among IT and security teams. Other insights from our CISO include the fact generic annual security training doesn't work while short, role-specific modules do, AI governance is lagging even as adoption rises which is creating vulnerabilities, and security teams are still fighting the ‘Department of No’ perception. How do we anticipate the future in a way that creates net human good? That was one of the challenging questions posed by our AD of Optimisation and Innovation Tracey Cotter-Martin at today’s Local Government New Zealand Zone 5/6 Conference. Tracey also explored the compounding challenges we face – like infrastructure deficits, workforce gaps, and energy demands – the role of AI and futures thinking in helping solve these challenges and why we need to put people at the centre of all our decision-making as we try to find the answers. Our Datascape modern, cloud-based software suite has been specifically built to help local government organisations in New Zealand and Australia to streamline operations, drive efficiency and improve the way they serve their communities, so we’re proud to sponsor the conference and help contribute to important conversations on the future of local government. Thanks Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) for bringing us together to have these conversations and for championing innovation and collaboration across the sector. “Local government is a very relationship driven type of business. There’s a sense of purpose. It means what we produce and deliver to our customers has a direct material impact on communities." For Datacom’s new Director of Datascape John Wiggs, working with councils to make a positive difference for the community is very rewarding.
