At Mowi, the health and welfare of our salmon are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to advancing sustainable practices to ensure the well-being of our fish. One of the most important advancements in modern aquaculture is post-smolt processing. This innovative approach allows us to rear larger, more resilient salmon before they enter our open sea pens. By reducing the time our salmon spend at sea, we reduce our environmental footprint whilst producing high-quality salmon products to feed consumers worldwide. Our post-smolt strategy is already delivering success and will remain a key priority for Mowi as we continue to realise its benefits. At Mowi, the health and welfare of our salmon is our top priority to ensure they have the best start in life. Like wild salmon, farmed-raised salmon spend the first part of their life growing in freshwater before they are transferred to our sea-based sites when they are physically ready. When at sea, the fish stay in our net pens for up to two years until they are big enough to be harvested for market. Swipe to learn ️some interesting facts about our net pens! ➡️

As we celebrate Earth Day, we recognise the potential of aquaculture to produce more sustainable food and be a solution to climate change. Mowi is committed to the Paris Agreement to limit global temperatures to 1.5˚C. Our climate roadmap identifies our strategic actions towards achieving our Science-Based Targets aligned with 1.5˚C. In 2024, we were delighted to achieve key milestones such as: ✅ Ranked #1 in the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index for the sixth year. ✅ Reduced scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 39% since 2019. ✅ 100% of harvest volumes were sustainably certified with a Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) recognised standard (ASC, BAP or Global GAP). ✅ 100% sustainably sourced feed. We're proud of our achievements so far and are committed to protecting the future of our planet.

At Mowi, we believe in sharing knowledge about our industry and supporting the next generation of professionals who will shape the future of sustainable aquaculture. Mowi works with schools and universities worldwide to present career opportunities in aquaculture, and we regularly welcome students to our farms to discuss salmon farming and its importance in feeding a growing global population. Mowi Scotland recently hosted SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) School of Veterinary Medicine at our Inchmore and Loch Alsh farms. Students gained practical experience in our business operations and carried out a fish health check led by our health team. We hope that this experience will inspire some of the students to become Mowi vets in the future, and we look forward to welcoming more students throughout the year.

We all know that salmon is one of the healthiest proteins we can eat, and according to new research published in Nature Ageing, Omega-3, the essential fatty acid found in oily fish, could also slow biological ageing. Led by Heike Bischoff-Ferrari from the Department of Geriatrics and Ageing Research at the University of Zurich, participants of the health trial took omega-3 supplements for three years and were found to have aged three months less, as measured by biological markers. However, those who combined omega-3 with vitamin D and regular strength training showed the most significant anti-ageing effects. This study adds to growing evidence that lifestyle choices, including having a healthy diet, vitamins, and regular exercise, can help slow the ageing process.
