Norway's new proposed aquaculture regulations are different than anything we've seen before. 🇳🇴 The proposal is to remove biomass licenses, and instead license farms on environmental emissions (e.g. sea lice). 🪲 Reading through the full report, one of the points that stood out is that one of potential models for setting that emissions limit call for a 70-90% reduction in sea lice pressure in PO3. To achieve that, what the government is asking for is effectively lowering the sea lice limits by that same factor. That will require some drastic changes to how the industry currently operates. For the last few years, the colder months has meant profitable harvests for salmon farmers. ❄️ But this year has been very different, with prices of exported salmon in Norway dropping +40 nok / kg within a month. 📉 These swings are not new - we've consistently seen large prices fluctuations throughout the year since COVID. This year however, its happening sooner in the year with a more drastic effect. So far no company has come out of Mattilsynet's audits unscathed. ✅ Over the last year, a number of companies have undergone governmental audits that focus on assessing whether Norwegian farming companies have effective systems, routines, and internal controls to meet regulatory requirements for fish health. 🐟 As Bård Skjelstad, the new head of aquaculture at Mattilsynet/Norwegian Food Safety Authority, has noted - "We believe that improvements at the system level lead to better outcomes for the greatest number of animals." Its pretty clear that the results of these audit will likely shape the path of future regulation in the Norwegian industry. Economic instability would kill the growth of aquaculture in most countries. 🏦 But that hasn't necessarily been the case for the Greece, coming out of the debt crisis of 2008. 🇬🇷 The country was obviously hit extremely hard, and the aquaculture industry wasn't immune to the impacts. But just like the challenges that researchers had to overcome to figure out how to breed seabass, the industry has continue to grow, particularly in the last few years. Our CTO, John Costantino was able to join Innovation Norway and the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization last week on a bilateral event between Norway and Greece to share insights and experiences. While he was boots on the ground, I took the time in this episode to take a look at the country as a whole, breaking down the market data, the impact of the financial crisis on the industry, and one my favorite stories on how scientists broke the code on breeding seabass. Getting ready for surgery... 🩺 Or at least, that’s what it felt like when we suited up at the packing plant of AVRAMAR in Astakos 🐟 This visit was part of a two-day aquaculture event hosted by Innovation Norway and Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization , where day one was dedicated to presentations from Norwegian companies and clusters within the aquaculture sector, and day two took us out of the conference hall and into the field. 🎤 On day one, it was really interesting to see the Norwegian innovations presented. And, moreover, to see the engagement from the audience! This really showcases the interest for Norwegian competence and solutions in Greece. With Norway being the largest producer of Atlantic salmon and Greece being a leading producer of Mediterranean species, collaboration and knowledge-sharing could help strengthening each others positions. 🌊 The next day we got to see and learn about their day-to-day operations in action. The field trip was also a great reminder that sometimes, the best way to understand an industry is to step into its shoes - (or in this case, its coats, gloves, and hairnets)! Finally a big thank you to Innovation Norway and Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization for hosting this well-organized this event. Q4 Reports from publicly traded salmon farms have wrapped up - biology looks good, the holidays brought some relief, and companies are making big moves 🐟 All the companies returned positive EBIT / kg figures.
