Two key takeaways stood out: 1️⃣ The CFO is no longer just the numbers person - they’re becoming the operational brain of the company. Today’s finance leaders are expected to be fluent in AI, automation and data-driven decision making, while also assessing team capabilities and driving efficiency across the company. 2️⃣ With investor sentiment shifting from the US to Europe, CFOs are seeing increased scrutiny on unit economics and capital efficiency. Growth at all costs is no longer the norm. Instead, European companies are expected to demonstrate sustainable margins, clear paths to profitability and smarter cash management from day one. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to attend and pitch at "Science Meets Startups: Innovating the Future of Smart Buildings" organized by Startuplab and SINTEF. We shared about ImportFlow and potential ways invoice data can contribute to smart building management and sustainability tracking. The session featured key research areas by SINTEF including energy flexibility, data-driven load disaggregation and model predictive control for heating systems in buildings. It was also great to meet other startups working in this space, including: ⚡ Alva (Ola Magnus Hersvik) turns electricity data into action, automation, and savings - cutting energy costs by up to 35% 🛌 MASE Home (Martin Mascella) reimagines compact living through cutting-edge robotics 🔗 SMARTWATT (Daniel Fjaertoft) is deploying algorithms to buildings at scale, saving energy and the world 💚 Netto (Erlend Bolle) is accelerating the transition to green financing for banks and real estate A panel discussion with Robert Skramstad from Eiendomshuset Malling & Co, Amin Haddadi from Oslobygg KF i Oslo kommune and Søren Secher from OBOS Living Lab explored how smart buildings are defined differently in commercial and residential contexts, and why it’s critical to prioritize user value and experience in these innovations. VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) is moving forward! What happened? The EU has approved key reforms to modernize VAT reporting, cross-border transactions and platform taxation. This means real-time digital reporting (DRR) will become the standard. E-invoicing will be prioritized and platforms facilitating goods and services will have new obligations. What does this mean for your business? 1️⃣ E-invoicing and DRR will be mandatory. Businesses must upgrade their invoicing systems to comply with real-time reporting requirements. Countries such as Italy, France and Poland are leading the way on this. 2️⃣ Digital platforms face stricter VAT rules and must adapt to new tax obligations, requiring better transaction tracking and reporting. Spain and Germany are already enforcing tighter regulations for digital platforms. 3️⃣ Cross-border VAT processes are changing and companies should review their compliance strategies to avoid penalties and optimize VAT recovery.
