At #EAIF2025, SNV contributed to an insightful session on low-cost rural electrification approaches and financing solutions, where panelists explored how distributed renewable energy (DRE) systems can be made more accessible for rural communities. Discussions centred on practical pathways—from results-based financing and microfinance to blended capital—that reduce end-user costs while supporting long-term system viability. Policy frameworks and private sector engagement were also highlighted as key to unlocking scale. Martijn Veen, Global Head of Energy at SNV, said, "With only a few years to go until 2030, we need more collaboration across ecosystem players — private sector, investors, governments and development partners. Let’s avoid reinventing the wheel and build on successful models." "An example is BRILHO Mozambique, where more than 3 million people were reached with off-grid energy solutions in just five years. This has been a collaborative effort ready for further scaling and replication." 🔗 Learn how the BRILHO programme is driving impact: http://bit.ly/3E0XiaJ The path to 2030 is short—let’s focus on scaling what works and building stronger partnerships to ensure we leave no one behind. #EnergyAccess #SDG7 #RuralElectrification #FinanceForDevelopment #CollaborationForImpact Sida FCDO Services

🌱 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 What if we viewed food and energy systems as part of the same solution, not separate challenges? At the 2nd Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference, we explored with partners, how the nexus of regenerative agriculture and the productive use of renewable energy can reshape food systems for the good of people and the planet. 🚀Here are expert insights from the side event: 🔹 𝗢𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀: “Siloed thinking was ‘killing us’—stifling progress and limiting impact. By breaking down barriers, we unlock new opportunities.” — Hon. Bwino Fred Kyakulaga, Minister of State for Agriculture, Uganda. 🔹 𝗢𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: “Kenya is shifting strategy—embracing a nexus approach to accelerate the uptake of renewable energy technologies.” — Eng. Stephen Nzioka, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Kenya. 🔹 𝗢𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: “Small-scale farmers earn just 3 to 4 Euros per day—buying renewable energy solutions outright is unrealistic. We must innovate financing models to make them accessible.” — Linda Mwangi, SowPrecise Africa. 🔹 𝗢𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: “An energy ministry might prioritise solar power without considering how it connects to agriculture, water, or fisheries. The nexus perspective is essential.” — Patrick Tonui, GOGLA. 🔹 𝗢𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: "Transforming food systems starts with empowering ecosystem actors. We recommend three key pathways: Learn, link, and leverage." — Eelco Baan, SNV. 🌎 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗔𝗦𝗛 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗵𝗲𝘁 🗺️ Savannakhet Province in Lao PDR is bordered by the Mekong River and a mountainous region in Vietnam—a geography that places 1.1 million people, especially in rural areas, on the frontlines of climate hazards. Flooding, droughts, storms, and erosion make it more difficult for local governments to ensure the provision of sustainable basic water and sanitation services. 🤝 As part of the Government of Australia’s Water for Women Fund-supported Towards Inclusive Climate Resilient Rural WASH (#ICRRWASH) programme, our team in Lao PDR assessed three of rural Savannakhet’s districts. Working in Atsaphone, Champhone, and Phalanxay, the team investigated challenges and explored the depth of coping mechanisms practised by local communities. 📊 The study aims to help local governments and private sector actors support climate adaptation and build more resilient and inclusive rural WASH services and systems, area-wide. 💡 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e5YQCS-T Explore the assessment’s key recommendations 👇 #ClimateResilientWASH #WaterSecurity #SNVImpactThatMatters

#DYK Nearly 80% of Kenya’s land is arid or semi-arid, yet these regions are home to more than half of the country’s livestock, which are vital for the economy and food security. 🐄 Agropastoralists in these areas face significant challenges, including erratic weather, land degradation, overgrazing, and poor livestock health. These challenges contribute to food insecurity and poverty, putting livelihoods at risk. 🍃Collaboration on innovative approaches is enabling farmers to adapt to the challenges of Kenya’s drylands. Through the ICSIAPL project, SNV, in partnership with KALRO FARMING, private-sector partners, and local communities, supports agropastoralists with climate-resilient agriculture and locally-led solutions. This initiative strengthens resilience and fosters sustainable livelihoods. 🔄This is just one example among many in the DeSIRA-LIFT initiative stories, demonstrating how innovations and long-term commitment create lasting change and impact at scale.   📖 Download here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dx5niF4Q #Innovation #Livestock #SustainableDevelopment #SNVImpactThatMatters

Who gets connected, who can afford to stay connected, and who is at risk of being left behind? In this #SNVPerspective, Off-Grid Energy Advisor Vassilca Jeremias reflects on Mozambique’s journey in expanding off-grid energy access. While mini-grids and PayGo solar solutions are scaling, affordability remains a critical barrier. Without deliberate policies to close this gap, energy transitions risk deepening inequalities rather than addressing them. ⚡️ Initiatives like +SOL, a spin-off of the BRILHO Mozambique Programme, are working to make energy access more inclusive—placing greater focus on mini-grids and clean cooking solutions.  However, long-term sustainability demands investment in local businesses, skills, and gender-inclusive approaches to ensure no one is left behind.    📖 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲: https://lnkd.in/g7fAafpK   #EnergyAccess #JustTransition #CleanCooking #RenewableEnergy #GenderInclusion #EAIF2025

With a focus on data from scrap dealers and small businesses, the municipality aims to improve how it plans and responds to local waste flows—while also contributing to Bangladesh’s wider plastic reduction targets.   🤝 This work supports Bangladesh’s broader commitments: a 90% reduction in single-use plastics by 2026 and 80% recycling by 2030. It also builds on efforts by the Department of Environment and SNV to explore digital tools like the Integrated Municipality Information System (IMIS)—developed with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh and the Gates Foundation—to strengthen local data systems.   Kushtia’s experience points to a broader consideration that systemic change depends on specificity—knowing what waste exists, who handles it, and where interventions are most needed.   #SNV #PlasticPolicy #Bangladesh #DataDriven #CircularEconomy #MunicipalLeadership #WasteManagement #SNVPerspective Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Patricia Solorzano Shahidul Islam Ismène R.A.C.
