Program Manager Jouke Goslinga explains: "RDM and M4H are the only port city areas where the city and port actually come together. And where, as a region, we can show what the port city of the future will look like." This dynamic district offers space for high-tech companies and start-ups focused on climate change, energy transition, and raw materials transition. Thousands of new homes will soon be built in Merwehaven, Marconi, and Keilekwartier. Goslinga adds, “Here, you get a combination of living and working in Rotterdam-style, so not only office space but also commercial space.” The future of Rotterdam is being shaped in this unique district, with innovation at its heart. The operation took place between two vessels alongside a newly developed quay, marking a significant step towards preparing the port for ammonia bunkering. The pilot was supported by bunker barge operator Victrol & Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, with facilitation from the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel, so no CO2 is released during combustion. The first ships capable of using ammonia as a bunker fuel are expected in 2026 or 2027. The ammonia bunker pilot is part of the European MAGPIE project. MAGPIE has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. #porthos #CO2 #portofrotterdam

Spanish delegation of ports, energy companies and government visits Rotterdam for strategic hydrogen routes On April 8 and 9, a large delegation from Spanish ports, energy companies and government visited the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The visit took place as part of a multi-year process to create maritime corridors for hydrogen imports between the Netherlands and Spain. Connecting low-cost hydrogen production in Spain with the excellent energy infrastructure in the Netherlands therefore offers a unique opportunity to accelerate strategic autonomy and energy transition in both countries. Program Manager International Hydrogen at the Port of Rotterdam Authority Monica Swanson: “The Spanish-Dutch corridor allows Spanish green hydrogen, made with energy from solar and wind, to reach Northwest Europe via the Port of Rotterdam - becoming one of the keys to European energy independence. We have had two important days with all the parties who can make the Spanish-Dutch corridor possible. We are pleased to see how the cooperation between parties is intensifying.” Sofie Boom, David van Maaren, Sergio Puerto, Alexander Garbar, Anne S. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has renewed the contract with Evides Waterbedrijf for the supply of drinking water to inland barges for the next five years. Evides has been supplying drinking water to inland barges in the Rotterdam port area with four water boats for decades. Barges paying port fees are allowed to take up to 6,000 litres of drinking water at a time from one of the drinking water boats. In the years to come, Evides and Port of Rotterdam will work together on making the fleet more sustainable and optimising the ordering process by means of digitalisation. #evides #drinkingwater #inlandbarges #portofrotterdam

Parties involved in the port of Rotterdam, including the Port of Rotterdam Authority, have presented joint agreements regarding important developments for the resource and energy transition, residential construction, accessibility and the balance with the living environment, such as landscape development and limiting noise pollution. This represents a joint substantiation of their shared perspective on the long-term development of the area. This is the first time that such a broad coalition of organizations has worked together on strategic spatial planning choices and the acceleration of projects in the port of Rotterdam region. This is necessary because many different spatial and social challenges converge in the region. Short-term choices are decisive for the long term and vice versa. Central and regional government want their collaboration to create a future-proof port in an economically powerful region that is attractive to live and work in. #portofrotterdam #energytransition

Yesterday, Vice President Commercial Matthijs van Doorn of the Port of Rotterdam Authority received President of the Bundesrat, Anke Rehlinger, at the newly opened port experience centre Portlantis at the Maasvlakte. Together with Mark Stoelinga and Wouter Demenint from the hydrogen team, they discussed federal government legislation for cross-border energy projects and the importance of hydrogen for Germany's industrial transformation. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is keen to work with Germany on a rapid connection to set up a cross-border hydrogen supply chain and to become Europe’s hydrogen hub. Right now, 13% of Europe’s energy consumption is being imported via Rotterdam. Anke Rehlinger and Matthijs van Doorn both emphasized the need for strong cross-border supply chains, to safeguard the competitive position of Europe’s industry. Rehlinger is also State Premier of the Saarland, a Federal State know for it’s steel production. Part of this steel is used in Rotterdam to produce monopiles at Sif Group. #portofrotterdam #energytransition

The 'Rail Connected' program has launched the train composition functionality, streamlining information exchange between carriers, rail operators, and terminals. This means there is digital clarity about the composition of the freight trains going to and from Rotterdam in terms of locomotive, carriages and containers. "Providing everyone with insight into train composition helps us avoid waste," says Saskia Mureau (Director Customer Digital Port of Rotterdam Authority). "Errors are detected earlier, capacity is better utilised, and failures can be identified in time, enhancing efficiency and trust within the supply chain."
