History was made! Vado Gateway proudly welcomed the M/V COSCO Shipping Nebula, a 21,000 TEU, 400-metre long vessel, the largest ever handled at our terminal, surpassing the previous 15,000 TEU, 368-metre record set in 2021. As part of the Ocean Alliance service connecting Asia with the Mediterranean, the vessel’s journey included calls at Singapore, Yantian, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Shanghai and Qingdao before arriving at the deep-sea quay. With a 17.25-metre depth, the terminal seamlessly handles ultra large container vessels (ULCVs), reinforcing their position as a key gateway in the region.
On the weekend, we celebrated a major milestone for Vietnam’s logistics and trade sector: the grand opening of the Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT). Through a strategic partnership between Hateco Group and APM Terminals, HHIT now offers two deep-water berths at Lach Huyen port, capable of accommodating vessels up to 18,000 TEU. In just two-and-a-half years, the terminal has become Northern Vietnam’s most modern gateway for international trade. At the opening ceremony, we also signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to deepen our partnership and explore future port and logistics investments in Vietnam. Each year, the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) honours companies that achieve the lowest incident rates in their respective categories with its prestigious Safety Awards. APM Terminals Pier 400 Los Angeles, the largest container terminal in the Western Hemisphere, recently won first place for safety among large container terminals - a testament to its commitment to protecting its workforce and ensuring a safe operating environment. The teams and management at APM Terminals Los Angeles are dedicated to constant care, driving year-over-year safety improvements. As a result, the terminal has achieved the lowest lost-time incident rate on the US West Coast. This achievement reflects the terminal's commitment to safety and the strong collaboration with ILWU in fostering a high-performance safety culture. With only 9% of schools in Vietnam equipped with swimming facilities and just 33% of students knowing how to swim, APM Terminals is sponsoring the construction of a new swimming training facility for the Doan Duc Thai Primary and Secondary School in Cat Hai District of Haiphong City. The new five-lane pool, set to be completed by August 2025, will provide 730 students with the opportunity to develop essential swimming skills, helping to prevent drowning incidents and foster confidence in the water. This project is part of our broader commitment to community engagement in Vietnam, where we have been active since 2007 through partnerships like the Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT). We are grateful to the People’s Committee of Cat Hai District for their partnership in this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive change this facility will bring to the students and families of the region. This Ramadan, the Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) partnered with the Egyptian Food Bank to distribute 36,000 kilograms of essential food items to 4,000 families in Port Said, North Sinai and Kantara. This initiative builds on our ongoing commitment to food security in the region, including our quarterly provision of 640 kilograms of protein. Together, and in all our terminals, we’re lifting standards of responsibility to care for the communities around us.
This week marks a very special milestone in our long history with the United States, as The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey has chosen to extend the lease extension at APM Terminals Elizabeth. APM Terminals Elizabeth handles more than 25% of the annual container throughput in the port complex, with the team delivering record results last year. APM Terminals has consistently invested in modernising infrastructure and equipment, and the extension will enable us to expand our capacity and lift the standard of efficiency for customers in the port. Collaboration drives meaningful change. A very special milestone today at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, in the Port of Rotterdam, where A.P. Moller - Maersk's 16.592 TEU dual-fuel methanol vessel "Adrian Maersk" was welcomed and named. We couldn't have imagined a more appropriate location for this milestone, as Maasvlakte II is a terminal that is fully electrified and powered by renewable energy: a flagship terminal that lift standards of responsibility in the industry together. With the Port of Rotterdam as a close partner, APM Terminals works in the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA) to accelerate electrification in the industry. Additionally, APM Terminals has entered a partnership with the Port and other partners to ensure shore power for vessels calling the terminal by 2028.
