🚀 𝟭𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗮! 🎉 A huge milestone: with Oncra, we have certified 100,000 tons of CO₂! 🌍💚 By building a fair and transparent CO₂ certification system, we have reached this incredible achievement together with all our carbon removers. Our registry is filled with amazing projects that have stored CO₂ in trees, elephant grass, seaweed, bio-based building materials, healthy soils, and more. All natural solutions with real impact for the climate, biodiversity, and people. This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without our incredible community of removers. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗿𝗶 / 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲 Last week together with the Climate Cleanup foundation (Sacha Brons & Jelle De Bijl), I visited the head quarters of KIRITEC in West Germany near Dusseldorf. With their parent company WeGrow AG they develop in vitro plants that are sold all over the world, to establish plantations of the fast growing Kiri tree (first thinning after 6 years, then larger fellings after 12 years), with in total 400 hectares in Spain and North East Germany. Because of the special root system and the large leaves, Kiri trees grow extremely fast (check out my picture with 4 year old Kiri trees, and also the huge year rings on the pictures), yielding an extremely light sawn timber (250 kg / m3), with high fire resistance, good insulation properties and seemingly good biological durability (check out the cladding mockup pictures after 5 years of exposure). The grain of the wood is beautiful resembling Radiata Pine and the tactility is very nice. The challenge for Kiri wood, as a newcomer on the market, is to find the right applications, including technical certification to showcase that this new wood product meets all requirements, e.g. for structural use. For example, Derix Group is testing if the material is suitable for producing #CLT used for structural walls (see the sample in the picture), but also the hexagonal dowel based building system (see pictures) that Kiritec has developed seems very promising because of the high efficiency (hardly any loss in processing from stem to product). Big news! Easy Housing has now officially certified its first 100 carbon removal units (CRU = 1 tonne of net CO2 removal) on Oncra (Climate Cleanup carbon removal registry). This is a unique achievement! We are the first biobased builder in the world that have officially quantified and certified its carbon removal realised; with our timber homes in Uganda. 💚Help out! These homes have been built and completed and have together stored 109 CRUs (of which 100 are still available). Next to that, these projects have sustained over 10 football fields of forests, created over 100 green jobs, and avoided an estimated additional 80 tonnes of CO2 by not using cement or steel. ONCRA holds strict ethical standards for buyers. Institutional buyers are only allowed to buy credits if they show they are also reducing internal emissions. Furthermore, the entire methodology is fully transparent and relies on hard quantifiable and verifiable data. For every CRU - an actual tonne of CO2 has been effectively removed from the atmosphere and stored for long term in our biobased structures. In opdracht van de provincie Gelderland lanceren Carbon Farmers en Stichting Climate Cleanup een innovatieve pilot om de teelt van meerjarige vezelgewassen - meer bepaald bamboe, miscanthus en paulownia - te combineren met de productie van biobased bouwmaterialen. Deze pilot biedt boeren en fabrikanten van biobased materialen een unieke kans om hun duurzaamheid te financieren met koolstofcertificaten die CO₂-vastlegging belonen. Volgende week maandagavond 11 november om 20:00, geef ik vanuit Building Balance een praktische #webinar over een voor Nederland unieke regeling: het Ministerie van Landbouw, Visserij, Voedselzekerheid en Natuur koopt #CO2 die door Nederlandse boeren uit de lucht wordt gehaald met #vezelgewassen. In samenwerking met verwerkers en bouwers leggen de boeren deze CO2 langdurig vast in #biobased bouwmaterialen. Een keten van land tot pand met sociale, economische en klimaatwaarde! Het ministerie koopt deze CO2 via het Nationaal Groenfonds vóóraf in, zodat de keten op gang wordt gebracht. De CO2-vastlegging wordt achteraf gecontroleerd en gecertificeerd als 'koolstofcertificaten' door onafhankelijke organisaties zoals Stichting Nationale Koolstofmarkt (SNK) of Oncra van Climate Cleanup . De webinar komt op een goed moment, want de dag erna gaat de regeling open (sluit op 5 december). In de webinar ga ik samen met Jan Willem van de Groep (Building Balance) en Sonja van der Eijk (Nationaal Groenfonds) in op alle praktische vragen bij deze regeling. Hoe doe je een aanvraag als (collectief van) agrariër(s)? Moet je al een verwerker hebben gevonden die producten levert aan de bouw? Waar verplicht je je aan? Hoe lever je achteraf bewijslast en wat is de rol van een projectplan? Genoeg vragen en ook genoeg tijd op 11 november om hier dieper in te duiken. Waaa ik won gisteravond bij de Klimaattop Gebouwde Omgeving de Young Professional Award 2024! Ik sta op #10 van de Duurzame 50 in de Nederlandse bouwsector en ben daarmee de hoogst geplaatste jongere onder de 30. Gefeliciteerd aan #1 Andy van den Dobbelsteen en alle andere genomineerden. Wat een eer om in de voetsporen te treden van Rosa Bos, die de Award vorig jaar won. Rosa gaf mooi aan wat de waarde van zo'n prijs is: je wordt serieuzer genomen als jonge professional. Nou, dan pak ik nu mijn momentje om serieus genomen te worden. Als er iets is dat we in de bouw serieus moeten nemen, is dat naast onze CO2-voetafdruk ook onze #handafdruk. Welke positieve impact realiseren we met elkaar voor klimaat, biodiversiteit en bewoner, en hoe kunnen we dat eerlijk waarderen en opschalen? Minder schade aanrichten is cruciaal, maar is meer herstel niet net zo belangrijk? En een stuk inspirerender om aan te werken, zeker voor nieuwe instromers zoals ik? Dus, weet jij al hoeveel CO2 er in je vastgoedportfolio zit opgeslagen? Hoeveel euro's klimaatschade je daarmee voorkomt? Laat jij in je duurzaamheidsrapportage al zien aan hoeveel CO2-opslag je hebt bijgedragen? In de stap richting toekomstbestendig, #biobased bouwen kan de waardering en financiering van CO2-opslag een belangrijke steun zijn. Dat doen we samen.
