We are appalled by the scenes of civilians killed in Gaza, amongst them so many children. After the Israeli government resumed waves of bombing last night, over 300 Palestinians have been killed. Families were caught by surprise during their Ramadan suhoor preparation and the little food they have. It is just unimaginable… Cut off from electricity, food, water and medical supplies, two weeks ago our team saw with their own eyes the intense suffering on the ground. Resuming the war will only add to the despair of a population that 50% of which is made up by children. How is it possible that the world allows for this to happen on its watch? How is it possible that the world allows for a civilian population of over 2.1M+ to endure the biggest death toll seen in modern warfare? This madness must stop, and international humanitarian law should be upheld at all times! We demand an end to the hostilities, a permanent ceasefire, release of the hostages and the restoration of basic services and livelihood. Until then we continue to work relentlessly to relieve the humanitarian needs. Please support and donate to our Stand with Gaza fundraiser via the link. https://lnkd.in/exXc5Yjr #StandWithGaza #AllEyesOnGaza #childrenAreNotATarget #PermanentCeasefire #Gaza #Israel

We are an organisation responding to a humanitarian crisis affecting the innocent humans forced from their homes.
Over ons
We believe everyone, no matter who you are or where you're from, should live in a healing and self-sustaining environment. We dream of a world where people forced from their homes have the freedom to choose another place to call home. We stand with and for people on the move. We build bridges with the local communities where we work. We want to transform refugee camps into safe, healing and enabling environments with our Camp to campUS philosophy. We are still small and we don't have all the answers, but we do fill in the humanitarian gaps whenever and wherever is most needed. We are determined to empower communities to thrive. We are Movement On The Ground.

Digital skills are essential for everyday life and employability around the world. That’s why we are thrilled to partner up again with Cisco to offer free, intensive computer skills training to residents of the Lesvos camp. Following the success of last year’s pilot, the initiative returned to deliver hands-on courses on digital education. For one week, people attended training on basic computer skills, coding and Photoshop, while also received professional coaching on CV writing, interview preparation and LinkedIn. Our graduates are now equipped with useful skills and with enthusiasm to tackle their future! 💻👔

Like 5 million other Syrians, Ali Shams Eddin left his country in search of refuge during the midst of an oppressive and relentless regime. On 8th December 2024, the world looked on in shock as this regime came to a sudden collapse. After 11 years of displacement, 28-year-old Ali could finally visit his treasured homeland again. Ali returns not only to be reunited with family and friends, but also with his own mission: to rebuild a free society in Syria. “I feel intense gratitude and joy that my country is finally liberated. Finally, I can see the people I love again. But most importantly, I return to my homeland with a mission to serve humanity. Local knowledge, skills and the strength of the community will be essential to rebuilding a free Syrian society. I will do all I can in my power to help unlock the potential of the Syrian people.” Ali Shams Eddin, Head of Mission, Movement on The Ground. The iftar dinners last month were a gift in many ways. Sharing, talking, eating, together as a community. Sometimes the simple things are the most important. Thank you to The Social Hub (B Corp™) without whom these moments would not have been possible🧡
As we closed the month of March, we want to highlight #BreakingBreadAcrossBorders, an incredible initiative we’re proud to have partnered with. Alongside Movement On The Ground (MOTG), we hosted community Iftar dinners throughout this Ramadan, bringing together unaccompanied minors, members of the local community, and our networks for evenings of reflection, and shared traditions. A small gesture to bring warmth, connection, and a taste of home to displaced communities, for whom breaking fast without the comfort of family, or a familiar space is especially difficult. With our deepest gratitude to Charlie MacGregor, Adil Izemrane, Patricia Vermeulen and their teams who always inspire us with their commitment to social justice. You are beacons of hope... It is hard to believe that less than a month ago our team visited Khan Younis under the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. Now the airstrikes are back in full force and the death and destruction continues. The UN reports at least 322 children have been killed in those few weeks, adding to the death toll of over 15,000 children being killed in Gaza. This cannot continue. We condemn the violations of international law that are designed to protect the innocent: children, civilians, humanitarian and medical workers, and demand a permanent ceasefire now. Even in times of war, there are laws to uphold. Now more than ever your donation (however big or small) can make a huge different. Always grateful for the daily acts of service that make the beating heart of our organisation 🧡
Cheers to volunteers! Volunteers are the heart and soul of many organizations. I’ve seen it firsthand at the Rode Kruis Nederland, AMREF and now, Movement On The Ground. Volunteers rise from within the community, stepping up to help others. They find purpose and fulfillment in their work - everyone benefits! Movement on the Ground works with Visiting Volunteers and Community Volunteers. Both are invaluable! ⭐ . 🧡 A Visiting Volunteer comes from all corners of the world, signs up with us, undergoes screening, and joins our team on Lesbos for several weeks or months. It is an important experience in which the human connection and feeling humble stand central. 🧡 A Community Volunteer also comes from all corners of the world, but not by choice. They were forced to flee their home country and are awaiting a decision on their asylum application. The power of Community Volunteers is straightforward: they speak Farsi, Arabic, Tigrigna, etc, and they understand the culture of people's home country. This facilitates building a relation and trust. Community Volunteers are very motivated to do something meaningful and make a positive impact 🍀. Movement on the Ground lets them manage and organize everything from food distributions to sports activities, educational classes (English, digital skills), vocational trainings (barista, sewing, painting). Everyone in the camp is welcome to sign up. We learned over the years that a camp run by Community Volunteers becomes a safer, more harmonious environment, with less chaos and more stability. We therefore call it a CampUs 🧡. And the real good thing is, that this approach has proven to be more cost-effective than a traditionally run camp. Which in turn is great news for organizations and donors. Want to learn more? Get in touch! In a next post I will share stories of incredible role models that have emerged over the last years amongst the Community Volunteers 🫶 . Let me just end here with a story about a 13-year-old boy I met this week in our CampUs on Lesbos. He comes from Sudan, and fled with his mother. Back in Sudan, he had many beautiful birds in and around his house and other small animals. He once asked his father if he could have a lion, but of course, that wasn’t possible. This sweet boy comes to our office on the CampUs every day. He’s there at 7:30 AM, waiting for our volunteers to arrive and open the doors at 9:00. He knows the timing and still loves arriving early. His mother is a Community Volunteer with us, and he is determined to volunteer with us too. And if he ever makes it to The Netherlands, he wants to work for Movement on the Ground. He touches me deeply. I smile at him, and I hope with all my heart that a beautiful future awaits him somewhere 🧡⭐ Thank you Maria Giulia Casini, Anouk Leroy, Munir Bassi, Nefeli Voulieri and all others in the team for hosting Jessica Heutink & friends, Maartje Bos and me this week! Keep up your great work!

This past weekend, in collaboration with Let's Have Hope LHO and our incredible ground partners, we had the privilege of sharing the spirit of Eid with displaced communities in North Darfur, Sudan. Together, we provided Ramadan packages and hosted a special Iftar dinner for 300 people—50 families—offering them a warm meal and a moment of togetherness in the midst of immense hardship. This is the power of community and solidarity. Thank you to everyone who has supported our Breaking Bread Across Borders initiative—your generosity is bringing comfort and hope across the globe. 🧡

When was the last time you slept outside in a tent? Maybe you were on holiday, or tried out ‘glamping’ that time, or perhaps you avoid it at all costs! Either way, it was most likely a choice. Other people do not have the luxury of choosing. Did you know that over 120 million people are displaced right now due to war, violence, famine, and general threats to safety? They have no choice but to sleep outside, often in tents, or even on the street, braving the harsh cold of winter and extreme heat in the summer. This number is only growing due to the impacts of climate change and increasingly hostile foreign policy. In solidarity, we will sleep outside on Saturday 10th May to spread awareness about the hardships displaced communities face across the world whilst raising money for the cause. Will you join the #SleepOut2025 ? Get involved via the link below and share this video to spread the message. https://lnkd.in/ecKbEucJ #displacement #refugee #activism
