Getting the Facts. The Panama Canal plays a crucial role in global trade. Did you know it even influenced ship classifications? The term Panamax refers to vessels built to fit the original locks, which operated from 1914 until the canal’s expansion. These ships were limited to 294 meters in length, 32 meters in beam, and 12 meters in draft. In June 2016, the expansion was completed, allowing the first Neo-Panamax ships to pass through the newly built locks. These larger vessels can be up to 366 meters long, 51 meters wide, and have a draft of 15.2 meters.
