Game-changing energy storage without batteries, tailored for offshore renewables.

Over ons

FLASC is a start-up working on non-battery energy storage for offshore applications. It is tackling a fundamental problem: the mismatch between renewable energy supply and consumer demand. Renewable energy is not stable and predictable and neither is the demand. Integrating storage with renewables can be a solution to this problem. It is the first solution tailored for co-location with offshore wind. It is based on an advanced hydro-pneumatic liquid piston concept where electricity is stored by pumping a liquid to compress a volume of air. We have now shifted to the Open-Gas Cycle technology, which embodies the latest developments in performance and energy density. No sea-water is used in this cycle. Using a patented pre-charging concept, and the marine environment itself as a natural heatsink, the compression process is optimised to achieve very high efficiencies, resulting in an offshore solution that is cost-competitive with land-based storage. With a co-located FLASC system, offshore wind farms can become an active provider of grid flexibility when using energy storage. Recent studies show that this can add 10-30% more value to the wind farm output by improving the way it is monetised. The FLASC technology is covered by international patents, received a Statement of Feasibility from DNV and recently selected for funding under the prestigious EIC Accelerator.

Negative electricity prices are a growing challenge for offshore wind farms. Can energy storage unlock new revenue streams? DNV recently conducted a feasibility study for Subsea7, evaluating the business case for offshore energy storage. The study compared subsea hydro-pneumatic storage with conventional lithium-ion systems in a co-location scenario with offshore wind farms. 📊 Key insights: • Offshore wind often generates excess electricity, leading to negative market prices • Integrating storage can enable offshore wind projects to participate more effectively in energy trading and ancillary service markets • A 50MW storage system with a 4-hour duration, co-located with a 1000MW wind farm, can significantly improve financial viability by leveraging market volatility Stian Sande, Energy Transition Strategy Director at Subsea7, said: "This study provides valuable insights and demonstrates how co-located offshore energy storage can contribute to a better-balanced and resilient grid, while enhancing the business case for offshore wind farms." By optimizing storage participation across different market segments, offshore wind projects can strengthen their business case - supporting both profitability and the energy transition. ╰┈➤ Want to learn more? • Last week FLASC attended a DMEC (Dutch Marine Energy Centre) Deep Dive on Offshore Storage. Thanks for the interesting discussions on new Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technologies and LDES revenues in different energy markets, Vincent Bonnin, Bas Kil, Cyriel de Jong, Daniela Fahrenkrog! It was shown that increasing the storage duration of battery systems does not lead to higher revenues due to the rising CAPEX. For storage needs of 4-10 hours, LDES offers a more cost-effective solution. Thanks to Vincent Bonnin for a great introduction to Project OESTER, where DMEC, FLASC, and other partners will be contributing later this year 😊

  • FLASC has been a frontrunner in co-locating offshore wind and energy storage for some time, and it is exciting to see RenewableUK's latest industry paper highlighting an approach we have long believed to be crucial! The report examines co-location of flexible technologies, such as batteries, long-duration energy storage or hydrogen production, with offshore wind farms. So why co-location is such a game-changer? 1. More efficient use of limited grid connections and reduction of land use pressure 2. Reduction of curtailment costs, especially as offshore wind is often at risk of being turned down when the grid is constrained 3. Opportunity for "stacked" revenue streams, e.g., wind + storage or wind + hydrogen, improving economic viability. 4. Grid stability services, e.g., reactive power, frequency response, if the appropriate regulatory framework is in place. The paper highlights that many of UK rules on transmission ownership, CfDs and licensing were designed before co-location gained traction and now need rethinking. Dedicated governmental strategies for storage systems and updated planning, metering, and licensing approaches will unlock investment in the multi-use models. This would speed up development and pave the way for storage projects which are particularly important for the upcoming bids in the North Sea region. It's exciting to watch the conversation catch up to what we have been developing for years. FLASC believes this is just the beginning for true innovation in offshore renewables and we are eager to help shape what's next! Here is a link to the full report: https://lnkd.in/errv697D

  • FLASC is taking a major step towards market entry with the development of a grid-connected pilot plant at Plant One Rotterdam BV in 2025-2026. Backed by EIC Accelerator funding (European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), this project will validate key performance data, ensure grid compliance, and undertake final qualification of the system ahead of market entry. Why does this matter? As offshore wind scales up to meet the REPowerEU target of 60 GW by 2030, energy storage remains a critical challenge. FLASC HPES (hydro-pneumatic energy storage) bridges the gap, offering a compact, cost-efficient, and sustainable solution to stabilize wind energy supply, enhance profitability, and support grid flexibility. Our solution is designed specifically for offshore, leveraging ocean-based isothermal processes to maximize efficiency. By tackling wind intermittency, demand fluctuations, and grid congestion, FLASC is set to accelerate the energy transition. #FLASC #EnergyStorage #EUeic #eicAccelerator

Daniel Buhagiar is in Tokyo this week, presenting FLASC’s offshore energy storage solution and exploring opportunities in the Japanese offshore wind market. Japan’s offshore wind sector is growing rapidly, and energy storage will play a key role in ensuring a stable and flexible grid. This visit is part of a broader initiative to foster international collaboration and explore potential partnerships. The week kicked off with a dynamic Business Matching Event, bringing together 60 European innovators and key Japanese stakeholders. Now, attention shifts to Smart Energy Week / Green Transformation Week at Tokyo Big Sight, where FLASC is showcasing its technology at the EU Pavilion (East Hall 7, Booth E81-8). A big thank you to the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation and the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) for their support! #FLASC #EnergyStorage #EUeic #eicAccelerator
