🇹🇷 Can Ekrem Imamoğlu, Istanbul’s Imprisoned Mayor, Become a Turkish Nelson Mandela? 🇹🇷 In Türkiye, Ekrem Imamoğlu emerged as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s main political rival during the latter part of his first term as Istanbul’s Mayor. As new presidential elections approach, however, just four days before his party’s primary was set to officialize his 2028 candidacy, dozens of armed police officers showed up at his door with a detention order. Imamoğlu now stands as an imprisoned presidential candidate, dismissed from his mayorship of Istanbul, with an annulled university diploma—constitutionally required for his candidacy. As the favorite to challenge Erdoğan’s now-decade-long rule, will Imamoğlu succeed in breaking free, replacing the incumbent, and becoming the 13th president of the republic? 🚨🇪🇺 Trump Rejects EU Proposal for Industrial Tariff Elimination 🇺🇸 🇪🇺 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed a comprehensive "zero-for-zero" tariff agreement to the U.S., aiming to remove all industrial duties—cars included—in a bid to de-escalate growing trade tensions. 🇺🇸 U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the proposal, stating it does not go far enough to reverse the recently imposed 20% tariffs on EU goods. 🇪🇺 Moving Beyond the Traditional Left-Right Spectrum: Rethinking Political Coalitions In a New Era 🇪🇺 Continuous evolution defines modern society, and political thought is no exception. As ideologies shift and develop, the traditional left-right paradigm increasingly fails to capture the true nature of political actors. Continuing to rely on such a binary framework hence arguably hides the diversity of today’s political landscape and risks distorting democratic engagement. The current classification model—one rooted in 18th-century political divisions—is no longer suited, argues Luca Boccardo, to a 21st-century context in which parties often defy linear categorisation, exemplified by today's populist and illiberal surge. Instead, a more rigorous and modern approach, classifying political parties not by ideological tradition or temporary coalition, but by their strategies, behaviours, and long-term vision, could do much to alleviate this inadequacy, argues Boccardo. Criteria such as communication style, approach to dissent, and methods of influence offer a more accurate framework for understanding political movements and their role in society. The time is ripe to move beyond outdated categories. 🇵🇱 Poland’s Rule Under PiS and the Usefulness of ‘Illiberalism’ as an Academic Concept ⚖️ Poland’s decade under the Law and Justice (PiS) party has been marked by a steady erosion of liberal democratic norms. From judicial overhauls and the undermining of the separation of powers to media restrictions and historical revisionism in educational curricula, PiS has profoundly reshaped the country’s political landscape under an ideology many have termed ‘illiberalism.’ And while recently ousted by the liberal-conservative Civic Platform party, the legacy of PiS’ rule still lingers as the country grapples with a continuing constitutional crisis. While PiS’ governance has been widely covered in the media, its rise has also fuelled a growing academic field on the concept of ‘illiberalism.’ But to what extent is this notion truly useful in analysing similar populist governments? And more specifically, how coherent is ‘illiberalism’ as an ideology?
