[PRESS RELEASE] Econowind has secured 1 million Euro in development capital from Invest International to advance and test its VentoFoil XL, a 24-30 meter high steel wind sail inspired by aviation technology. Frank Nieuwenhuis explains: "With this investment, we can accelerate our focus on the deep-sea markets. Having already delivered over 100 sails for smaller seagoing vessels, it is now time for the VentoFoil XL. The market demand is high, and the potential is enormous. FuelEU Maritime is pushing for lower emissions, and shipowners need practical solutions to stay compliant. The Wind Reward Factor (WRF) acknowledges the benefits of wind propulsion in reducing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. With a WRF between 1% and 5% (ranging from 0.95 to 0.99), ships using wind power face less stringent CO₂ reduction targets. This makes compliance easier and more cost-effective while improving Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) scores. Econowind’s VentoFoils are designed to maximize these benefits. By actively reducing fuel consumption, they lower emissions and take full advantage of the Wind Reward Factor, helping shipowners meet FuelEU regulations efficiently. First VentoFoil installation on a newbuild in Japan! The brand-new multipurpose vessel PRIMA VERDE is set to sail with two VentoFoil units installed, one containerized and one flat rack unit. Congratulations to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., Daishin Shipping, Mol Dry Bulk, and Mol Techno-Trade, for this significant step towards reducing emissions in shipping. The VentoFoils provide extra thrust and thus fuel savings. The PRIMA VERDE is also notable for being the world's first vessel to incorporate green steel and an engine powered exclusively by marine gas oil (MGO), further enhancing its eco-friendly profile.
