EAIE: European Association for International Education heeft dit gerepost
I just returned from the APAIE Conference in Delhi and wanted to share some reflections. It was exciting to see the conference held in India for the first time – an emerging leader in the region with a vast higher education system and a young, ambitious student population. Thank you to Venky Shankararaman and the APAIE secretariat for making it possible for us to be there! I was fortunate to reconnect with familiar faces from the EAIE, both volunteers and participants. There was a strong sense of anticipation for #EAIE2025! At EAIE, we strive for diverse participation, particularly by expanding access for underrepresented countries. #APAIE2025 provided an excellent opportunity to connect with universities across the Asia-Pacific region. India, in particular, presents high potential for further collaboration and engagement for the EAIE. We will continue discussions with Secretary General Dr. Pankaj Mittal regarding the Indian Network for Internationalisation of Higher Education, an initiative of the Association Of Indian Universities. While meetings and sessions kept us all busy, the state of the world felt more present than ever, both in the countries represented and those absent. Informal conversations revealed growing concerns about inward-looking policies that challenge international education’s purpose. Given this, the conference theme was especially fitting: “Cultivating Global Citizens for the Future: The Higher Education Imperative in the Asia Pacific and Beyond.” Global citizenship must shed its elitist connotations and resonate with everyone as a way of understanding the world and our shared responsibilities. International education can foster this awareness. Erasmus, for instance, has created European consciousness more than any other measure. During the Global Debate at the closing session, facilitated by Will Archer, we discussed virtual mobility, AI, environmental sustainability, and the social license of international education. As EAIE President, I emphasised two key messages. First, we must redefine the narrative around international education, shifting beyond economic benefits to showcase its societal impact through data and personal stories. Second, on sustainability, there remains a gap between policy aspirations and real-world practices, particularly in international education. Europe is viewed as a leader in this space, and as international educators, we can set the standard for intentional change. A highlight was hearing from Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi. His call to action – rooted in consciousness and compassion – was the most meaningful souvenir of Indian philosophy I could take home, alongside the principles of non-violence and interconnectedness. No time for material souvenirs, but reinforced values and good memories of moments shared with colleagues at the APAIE or just enjoying the ride through the traffic of Delhi. See you next time somewhere else and next year at the conference in Hong Kong!
