We kicked things off on Wednesday 2nd of April, with two deeply meaningful events focused on rare diseases, both held right here in our home base — the Leiden Bio Science Park: 🔹 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒄 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝑹𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒔 by Charles River Laboratories 🔹 2𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒏𝒏𝒖𝒂𝒍 𝑹𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝑫𝒂𝒚 with a focus on 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑨𝒄𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝑳𝒂𝒃𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒂 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒑𝒚 Both highlighted the urgent need to develop treatments for 𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 — a field that often doesn’t get enough attention but affects millions worldwide. What struck us most was how many companies in this space are 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 and the dedication of families fighting for a cure. It was both moving and motivating. The very next day, we headed to Rotterdam for our first-ever visit to Innovation for Health — the leading event for life science & health innovation in the Netherlands. It definitely won’t be our last time attending! Watch the after movie to get an idea of how the event was: https://lnkd.in/eeUqkA7w And to round it all off, we wrapped up on Tuesday 8th of April with the 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉~𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 & 𝑬𝒀 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝑺𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔 & 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝑺𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔, focused on 𝘊𝘈𝘙-𝘛 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴' 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 to support cell and gene therapy innovation. As CAR-T is one of the key focus areas for our product application, this meet-up was especially valuable to us. This brings the total project budget to €4 million! The consortium is led by Oluwafemi Ojambati from the University of Twente, in collaboration with Smart Mechatronics And RoboTics (SMART) Research Group from Saxion University of Applied Sciences and industrial partners biotactical and studio GYDIAR. Our mission? To develop a highly sensitive and reliable automated microbial detection system using #nanophotonics, #robotics, and #AI. Why does this matter? Microbial contamination is a major global challenge, contributing to diseases, foodborne illnesses, and hospital-acquired infections. Current detection methods are expensive, slow, and require highly skilled personnel, while more affordable alternatives often lack sensitivity and reliability. Human involvement in testing also increases the risk of cross-contamination, leading to faulty detections. Our project aims to overcome these limitations by creating a detection system that is more sensitive, fast, reliable and affordable, with no human intervention. - Femi’s group will focus on new nanophotonics-based detection methods. - My group will develop robotics and AI-driven automation to speed up the process while reducing human involvement. - Our industrial partners will focus on domain specific knowledge and #systemsengineering, and eventually advance the technology for commercialization. Kudos to クリシュナ Krishna Sheombar Sing 🤙🏾🙋🏾♂️|Frank Giesen. This consortium combines complementary expertise to bridge the gap between fundamental research and market-ready solutions. Together, we are developing a groundbreaking tool for microbial testing, improving safety and efficiency across multiple sectors. Cheers! #scientificresearch, #appliedresearch, #innovation, #robotics, #AI, #nanophotonics.
