Today, the European Parliament approved the "stop-the-clock" section of the #Omnibus proposal, postponing reporting and due diligence requirements under both the #CSDDD and the #CSRD. Also, today, the University of Luxembourg, through the Luxembourg Centre for European Law (LCEL) - University of Luxembourg, provided a platform to reflect on these developments. Thank you for the opportunity to contribute to this timely and important conversation on business and human rights, and EU law.

On brand for me to emerge from hibernation to share the wonderful news of my monograph - 'International Financial Institutions and Sustainable Development: Lawmaking and Accountability' - being published very soon by Cambridge University Press. Building from my doctoral dissertation at Yale Law School, this book unpacks the multilateral development banks' (MDBs) environmental and social policies (or safeguards) and examines their acccompanying independent accountability mechanisms, to reveal the international lawmaking role of MDBs and to better explain the long-standing calls for them to account for how economic, social, and environmental sustainability is understood and pursued, especially in the Global South. Thrilled to see "International Legal Theory and the Cognitive Turn" (Oxford University Press, 2025) out in the world, featuring such a rich collection of chapters. 📣 Join the Business & Human Rights Working Group (Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research) and the Amsterdam Center for International Law (University of Amsterdam) for a workshop on ‘Multi-stakeholder Collaboration under the CSDDD’! 📣 How can we ensure that the CSDDD is effective in promoting human rights? Multi-stakeholder collaboration, whereby different actors shape, implement, and oversee due diligence practices, has been advanced as a solution. Save the date! 19 May, 15:30cet A lecture with Dimitri Van Den Meerssche speaking about his recent paper (co-authored with Gavin Sullivan) about Cerberus - an advanced digital bordering system deployed in the UK that fuses together diverse data sources for analysis by machine learning algorithms to identify and pre-empt the cross-border movement of ‘risky’ people. Dimitri's presentation will critically analyse Cerberus as a distinctive governance infrastructure, highlighting how it materially assembles risk and suspicion, and reconfigures both power and accountability in UK border governance and legal practices. https://lnkd.in/er79Ng5p

It was a real pleasure to talk with Dr. Rebecca Mignot-Mahdavi in this first episode of the new Digital Echoes season with Völkerrechtsblog. We spoke about practices of governance by algorithm and the emergent forms of exclusion and inequality these entail. As our existing regulatory repertoire is falling short in capturing these problems, we explore new pathways for political critique and contestation.
