I am glad to be speaker at the 2nd Annual Group Treasurer during 14-15 May 25. For this event, I will share experiences more than 20 years in the part of funding, maintain relationships with banks. Let’s see, the great event.

I spent two days last week attending the Trueventus Transit-Oriented Development Symposium in Burnaby. This symposium brought together over 50 professionals from across Canada and the United States working on transformative transit-oriented development, integrated development, major transit projects, and city-building initiatives and programs. This was a great opportunity to hear about not only the successes and new ways that practitioners are working to deliver bold new TOD projects and programs – from partnership models, innovative design, and how to better incorporate these developments into everyday life – but also the challenges, needs, and gaps that get in the way and the problems that result. What I heard was things like conflicting visions between project partners, misaligned timing, lack of clarity around roles, and how to navigate trade-offs. I had the opportunity to share how Access Planning works in this space – which is focused on aiming to solve for the key things that other speakers raised as challenges. At Access, our team is not designers, architects, or developers. Our role in TOD projects – like much of our work in other areas – is in helping complement the traditional focus on “design excellence” with what we call “integration excellence” – ensuring that there is clarity on the outcomes that need to be achieved, clear roles and accountabilities, and right processed to ensure effective decision making and navigating inevnitable trade-offs that come with limited time, space and money in any project. We have done this for Sound Transit, TransLink, the Government of British Columbia, Metrolinx, Halifax Regional Municipality and others. It's easy to take these things for granted in projects and bring a view that “we can figure that stuff out later” but our experience is its critical to ensure you take the time to sort out these elements at the start and provide mechanisms to keep revisiting and review these as situations change. Without this, risks increase for project benefits to be misinterpreted, key opportunities missed, - and worse – the wrong project ultimately being delivered. Keen to learn more about how we do this?
