Every student faces struggles in different ways, and one struggle that’s always been close to my heart is the lack of access to basic eye care. I realized that while glasses were an easy solution, they weren't always reaching the students who needed them the most. This is where I took a step forward to solve the problem in my own way at my school. Thanks to the systems thinking approach I learned from Teach For Malaysia I was able to connect the dots and create a solution that worked for these students. This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Global Specialty Ingredients, @Eyework Centre, Serian and the incredible people who contributed to the crowdfunding campaign. Together, we made sure these students finally had access to what they needed !

Part of my job is to tell stories. Some days, the stories come easy, especially when the audience is visually receptive. It’s actually the bit that I love the most. Some days, it feels like an uphill climb when you’re faced with serious poker players with their tell-nothing blank face. Yesterday, at the outing to University of Manchester, we ended up with a hotpot of stories.. of our Fellows, the children of Malaysia, my own AND the stories of these young people. As we sat around after, over rendang and lemang, I looked around and realised that I was so blessed to be in the company of critically-thinking young people. A generation of Malaysians who are pondering beyond themselves, their lil bubble here as a student. They are not afraid to have the hard conversations. Not only that, as student leaders, they are not afraid to create and open spaces for hard conversations. Can I see amongst them future Fellows for Teach For Malaysia? Yes indeed I can. In my mind’s eye and my soul ~ I am already lifted and inspired by their impact stories to come. Will you take up the call and stand for #SemuaAnakMalaysia is what I am leaving them with. #SayYES2DaMovement

Just a year ago, I struggled to use technology in my history lessons. I had so many ideas to make learning engaging and interactive, but every plan was met with the same frustrating roadblocks where no internet connection across the school and faulty plug points in most classrooms. It was disheartening because SMK Tebakang had the resources such as laptops, iPads, and a well-equipped computer lab. But with over 1,300 students, a single computer lab wasn’t enough. The best place to utilize these tools was inside our classrooms, yet without WiFi and working plug points, I was constantly limited. I often found myself compromising, taking students outside the classroom to make lessons engaging. But deep down, I knew they deserved more learning experiences that would spark curiosity, excitement, and active participation. Then, change began to unfold. With the support of school PIBG and local political leaders, our school installed WiFi, and plug points were finally repaired. It felt like a breakthrough until we realized the WiFi coverage didn’t reach the classroom blocks. That’s when Teach For Malaysia and Teach For All stepped in, bridging the gap by collaborating with Starlink to strengthen our internet connectivity. This transformed our learning environment, allowing me and my fellow teachers to finally bring technology into our classrooms. And today? I see the impact firsthand. I planned a simple Quizziz game using iPads, and suddenly, my students were engaged, competitive, and eager to learn. "Cikgu, nak main lagi, boleh ke?" "Saya nak cuba lagi sekali sebab tadi saya jawab salah!" Their excitement was contagious because they weren’t just playing, but they were learning, growing, and pushing themselves to do better. As I reflect on this journey, I see how many hands made this possible where the government ensuring we had gadgets, school leaders improving facilities, PIBG and political leaders supporting WiFi installation, and TFM & TFA ensuring the sustainability. It truly takes a village to raise a child. And today, I saw that village come together right in front of me. #teachformalaysia #fellow2023 #classroomstruggle #bridgethegap #smktebakang
