🔔 Klibberen is an old tradition in Catholic areas, in Alsace, along the Moselle in France and in Luxembourg, which consists of the Klibber boys and girls, usually the mass ministers, replacing the church bells from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday, who then, as the popular saying goes, go to Rome to confess.
A tradition stemming from darker times, now simply seen as a joyous event for children known as “Klibberkanner.” Once upon a time, a sickness so scary lepers carried long sticks and a rattle known as the “Klibber” to ward off the sick. Today, there’s no need for such superstitions, however, the nostalgia of keeping with tradition. Children around Luxembourg walk with their Klibber with the hope of gathering easter eggs and sometimes even money from their neighbourhoods!
🪺 So, if you wake up one day wondering what all the noise is about, it’s likely to be the sound of tradition.
