As international brands deepen their commitment to environmental sustainability, the electricity powering their production must be verifiably clean—but how can that be guaranteed? Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) offer a transparent solution serving as proof that the electricity consumed by businesses is generated from renewable sources. For Cambodia, where exports—particularly from the garment sector—are a major economic driver, introducing a credible REC system is increasingly essential. RECs not only enhance transparency in corporate climate reporting, but also support the financing of new renewable energy projects, helping Cambodia to achieve its net-zero emission target by 2050. Whether through a single-buyer utility model or a more flexible open market system, RECs will play a pivotal role in strengthening Cambodia’s export competitiveness while accelerating the deployment of renewable energy sources like solar and wind. https://lnkd.in/gvvknv-k

EV adoption in Cambodia is rapidly increasing, with personal EVs up by 710% and two-wheelers by 307% in just two years (2023-2024). This aligns with the government’s National Policy, aiming for 70% electric motorbikes and 40% electric cars and buses by 2030. EV users report significant savings and satisfaction, however there are still a number of challenges. Rolling out charging stations in rural areas must be a priority - given how many Cambodians rely on their car to visit their province. It's also important that the tax code continues to support EVs - given that upfront costs are still often higher. The long-term benefits of electric cars for Cambodia are huge - reducing our reliance on imported fossil fuels, improving air quality and slashing our carbon emissions - so it's important that policy continue to strongly support the adoption of EVs. https://kiripo.st/cjMxXp

Last week, our Policy Engagement Manager, Sokphalkun Out, had the privilege of joining an insightful discussion , made possible through Oxfam’s connection, with master’s degree students from George Washington University. Hajrah Jalil, Rawand Hidmi, Jingyu Sun are working on a Capstone Project focused on: “Solar Technology for Floating Villages in Cambodia – Just Energy Transition Project.” The discussion delved into critical topics such as barriers to energy access, sustainable solutions, community perceptions, and the impact of climate risks on energy infrastructure and livelihoods, particularly from a civil society organisation (CSO) perspective. Energy transition is about more than just providing affordable electricity to those who need it most; it’s also about understanding how access to energy transforms lives by improving livelihoods, education, and overall well-being. At EnergyLab, we proudly support a just and inclusive energy transition that leaves no one behind. We’re excited to see how this project unfolds and look forward to staying connected as they work toward innovative solutions for sustainable energy access in Cambodia! #EnergyLab #CleanEnergy

EnergyLab Asia was thrilled to collaborate with our partner Representative Office of Mitsubishi Corporation, for an engaging knowledge-sharing session on March 27. Our colleagues provided insights into Cambodia’s renewable energy landscape, with a focus on solar PV. We also explored key energy policies that support the Government’s climate and sustainability commitments and discussed how these policies and clean energy technologies contribute to strengthening Cambodia’s energy security, economy, and competitiveness. We look forward to continuing these important discussions and actively supporting the growth of the renewable energy ecosystem.
