🌍 Kenya’s Soils: One Problem, Many Faces. The stats clearly indicate the state of our soils: 🧪 63% of arable land is acidic 🌱 80% of soils are phosphorus-deficient 🌾 75% have depleted organic carbon These aren’t just stats, they are red flags for #foodproduction, farmer livelihoods, and national #foodsecurity. 👉 The solution? Not one-size-fits-all. We need tailored, sustainable soil management strategies that respond to the unique needs of different regions and #farmingsystems. Investing in soil health isn’t just smart agriculture — it’s smart economics and climate action. Read more on how to do this in the #SoilAtlasKE https://lnkd.in/dE9fNVBt

🌱 The Silent Crisis Beneath Our Feet: Soil Degradation in East Africa Did you know that over 40% of East Africa’s soils are degraded? In #Kenya alone, #croplands lose up to 26 tons of soil per hectare annually, and 40% of irrigated land suffers from salinization. This #silent erosion threatens not just agriculture, but our region’s #foodsecurity, #economy, and #climate resilience. #Healthysoils are the foundation of sustainable food systems — and yet they remain one of the most overlooked resources. We urgently need: ✅ Investment in sustainable land management ✅ Strong policy frameworks and enforcement ✅ Community-driven soil restoration efforts We need to bring #soil back to the center of the conversation. https://lnkd.in/dxsZw-pe #SoilAtlasKE

Agriculture is devolved in #Kenya. In many ways, this set counties as frontiers of determining how #agriculture policy and development is shaped. At the heart of any such policies should be #farmers and consumers. In Kajiado County, with the facilitation of the Route to Food , an initiative of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Nairobi the farmers are taking bold steps in demanding for a different type of agriculture & food production. Farmers and consumers are approaching the county government asking for an end to toxic production of food. They have for instance asked the Kajiado County government to condem the use & trade through regulations of any pesticide element classified as a Highly Harzadous Pesticide (HHPs) and which have received condemnation in Europe. In counties like Nakuru & Kiambu, the demand for organic inputs such organic fertiliser and seeds is on, ensuring that there is fairness to the organic farmer who hardly receives any input support from government. Can counties do it? Yes because the forth schedule of the Kenyan constitution in devolving agriculture including the control of pest and diseases envisions counties to positively shape their destiny through sound agroecology practices & policies. Counties must be bold, intentional and futuristic. The farmers are asking that any farm production bills, regulations etc must promote the principles of #agroecology. That would be inline with the constitution duty to enure that citizens have the highest possible standards of life, even on matters food rights. And with the recently launched national agroecology policy, counties have a framework from which to start from and even further stretch their agri imagination, protecting the agri biodiversity and the soil resource that is greatly damaged by years of building wrong. To the farmers, they must sustain the creation of policy and practice demand for agroecology mainstreaming at the counties. One county a time and the #agroecology fever will soon have caught the whole country leading to an immunity against the perils of conventional agriculture. A call for stakeholders to be more strategic in advancing the movement. (Ps. The agriculture committee of the Kajiado County Government visitied Kimana ward to access the extent of the HHPs prevelance in crop production. This was as a result of farmers petition on the same.) When Women Are Killed for Being Women, It's Not Just Murder — It's Femicide. 170 women killed in 2024. 1 every day in the past week. Yet Kenya still doesn’t recognize femicide as a stand-alone crime. It’s time to name it, track it, and stop it. Sign the petition to demand legal recognition of femicide and justice for victims. http://amn.st/6045FQncz Usikimye #MakeFemicideACrime #EndFemicideKe

The recent incident in Kisii where a woman was physically forced to throw soil into a grave during a burial ceremony - resulting in chaos and assault - points to how culture reigns in rural Kenya. What constitutes a human rights violation under constitutional law may be viewed as cultural enforcement in some communities. As we have seen . This disconnect between national legal frameworks and local customary norms creates blind spots in our #GenderAdvocacy and significantly undermines the progress we have made. As ELIZABETH ODONDI powerfully stated, during the recent #GenderForum by Heinrich Böll Foundation, Nairobi , we often focus on constitutional protections while overlooking how customary laws function in rural communities. This specific burial ritual, while shocking to many urban Kenyans, was defended by some as "cultural practice" in the Kisii community. True progress in gender equality means understanding this intersection - where constitutional protections meet customary practices. As Human Rights Defenders, it is our duty to understand how we can address both systems for us to create meaningful and sustainable change. Let's never forget the central role Culture plays in our work. #GenderEqualityKenya #CustomaryLaw #HumanRightsKenya #KisiiCulture #KenyanWomen #EndGBV
