A very big congratulations to New GX Capital, RMB - Rand Merchant Bank and Khudusela Pitje on achieving the first close of the Airnergize Capital Fund I, and raising R2.4 billion ($120 million). Airnergize Capital will invest in scalable, high-impact solutions across renewable energy, gas, and water infrastructure in South Africa. Managed by New GX, the fund aligns with global sustainability goals and is committed to fostering a low-carbon economy and inclusive growth. It targets both capital-heavy and asset-light business models, backing experienced teams in companies with a solid track record. 💰Balancing the Books & Powering a Greener Future: Meet Our CFO, Riaan van Zyl🌍 Riaan’s global experience includes a stint 170km north of the Arctic Circle at a zinc and lead mine in Alaska, where temperatures dipped to a bone-chilling -35°C. When he’s not diving into financial models, his most competitive moments are on the golf course, cricket pitch, or tennis court - usually chasing after his 3 boys. His decision to join the renewable energy space is deeply personal: he’s driven by the desire to help build a better, more sustainable future for the next generation. I also remind myself: “Fortune favours the brave.'” 🚀 Why renewable energy?  "Having 3 boys at home provides a great deal of inspiration to help create a better future for them. We’ve all seen the studies on the impact fossil fuels have on climate change, and how renewable energy can help counteract that. If I can contribute in some small way to make the future a better place for my kids, I’ll grab the opportunity with both hands." 🔑 On sustainability:  "It's about ensuring that economic development doesn't come at the cost of our natural environment. V&A Waterfront Helipad Takes Off with Solar Energy 🚁☀️ Imagine this: You’re about to take off on a scenic helicopter tour over Cape Town’s breathtaking coastline. The rotors spin, the engine hums, but what you don’t see is how solar energy is working behind the scenes to make it all more sustainable. At the V&A Waterfront Helipad, we installed a 182 kWp solar PV-diesel hybrid system to reduce increasing electricity and operating costs. The Helipad forms part of the East Pier Precinct, where we have also installed two additional solar PV plants - one at V&A’s Desalination Plant and another at the Department of Environmental Affairs. Global abalone farming leader, Aqunion reduces energy costs while producing 560 tonnes of abalone each year 🌊 In the video below, Anja Visagie discusses how we helped Aqunion achieve cost savings by optimising energy usage during peak and off-peak hours through tariff arbitrage functionality. After a competitive tender process, SPS was selected to provide a technologically robust solution and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that eliminated the need for upfront capital investment by Aqunion. A state-of-the-art microgrid system was implemented, augmenting Aqunion's existing hydro plant and seawater storage facility to further optimise energy usage and maximise cost efficiency. The largest system at Aqunion Romansbaai features a 2.4 MWp solar PV capacity and 8.2 MWh of battery energy storage. ☀️ With the implementation of SPS’s renewable energy solution, Aqunion anticipates a significant shift in its energy consumption profile. “We expect to see our energy costs decrease over time and our reliance on renewable energy increase from 10% to 30%,” Rowan Yearsley, CEO of Aqunion comments. Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS), in partnership with Darling Green Country Estate and Touchpoint Energy, has successfully commissioned a 1 MW solar power plant in Darling, within the Swartland Municipality. This initiative is part of a broader renewable energy push in the region, with plans already underway for an additional 5 MW solar farm adjacent to the current installation. The project not only ensures clean energy supply to the estate but also supports Swartland Municipality through surplus energy sales under a three-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The newly operational solar facility, launched on 10 March 2025, serves as the primary power source for the Darling Green Country Estate through its dedicated green energy provider, Darling Green Utility. In addition to supplying the estate, excess power will be directed to the municipality, reinforcing the area’s commitment to sustainability. By the end of the PPA period, estate growth is expected to absorb most of the plant’s energy output, making it largely self-sufficient. SPS played a central role in delivering the project, offering both technical expertise and funding as a complete solution provider. TouchPoint Energy (formerly Genesis) contributed significantly to the project’s initial stages by assisting with conceptualisation, design, and legal structuring. Their combined efforts have led to a project that ensures residents of Darling Green Country Estate enjoy uninterrupted electricity during load shedding stages 1 and 2, offering a more reliable and cost-effective energy solution. Francois Van Themaat, Managing Director (Large Projects) at SPS, and Klaus-Gustav Göbel, Founding Shareholder of Darling Green Country Estate, emphasized the significance of the initiative, thanking Swartland Municipality for its progressive stance on renewable energy. “We are proud to have commissioned this pioneering project, ensuring that the future energy needs of Darling Green Country Estate are met by the Swartland sun,” they said.
