Incredible news from the Dja Faunal Reserve in Cameroon! Recently, our team, in collaboration with the reserve’s #conservation service, rescued a female pangolin from poachers. Just three days after her rescue, she miraculously gave birth to a male tricuspid-scaled #pangolin! Pangolins, classified as endangered by the IUCN, are among the most trafficked mammals globally. Their protection is vital—not only for their survival but also for maintaining ecosystem balance, as they help control termite and ant populations. By safeguarding these gentle creatures, we are also ensuring the health of our forests! #AfricanConservation Facheux T. African Wildlife Foundation's mission is to ensure wildlife and wild lands thrive in modern Africa.
About us
The African Wildlife Foundation, together with the people of Africa, works to ensure the wildlife and wild lands of Africa will endure forever. Founded in 1961 at the height of the African independence movement, AWF (then known at the African Wildlife Leadership Foundation) was created to help newly independent African nations and people conserve their own wildlife. AWF’s first approach was to train and educate African conservation professionals. AWF helped establish the College of African Wildlife Management, wildlife clubs in a number of African countries, and has sponsored dozens of African scholars in their pursuit of Master’s and Doctoral degrees in conservation. For more than 50 years, AWF has been a key player in African conservation and sustainable development. AWF has defined large conservation landscapes that are essential to securing the future of Africa’s wildlife. Within these landscapes, AWF employs an integrated approach to conservation including land use planning, education and capacity building, development of conservation enterprise to improve livelihoods, and applied research.

Highlight Video from the AWF-GEF Regional Training Workshop Here's a recap of what took place this week during the AWF-GEF Regional Training Workshop, hosted at AWF Headquarters in Nairobi. What makes this workshop different is its clear pivot from theory to implementation. It’s about preparing African governments to not only manage GEF resources efficiently but also lead from the front, embedding conservation priorities into national development plans and policy frameworks. As environmental challenges become more complex and cross-cutting, the need for homegrown leadership has never been more urgent. This training exemplifies a shift toward Africa owning both the challenges and the solutions, backed by robust systems, empowered people, and well-resourced institutions. Africa’s environmental future hinges on strategic leadership. This workshop, which brought together Global Environment Facility (GEF) Operational Focal Points (OFPs) from 23 African countries for a strategic and technical engagement focused on strengthening institutional capacity, was a reminder that meaningful conservation begins with capable people and sound governance. #GEFOPs Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, Susan Waithaka, Jonky Tenou, Kaddu Kiwe Sebunya, Frederick Kumah, Edwin Tambara, Facheux T. This is a vital step in energizing the GEF Operational Focal Points across Africa and beyond, enabling them to take charge of their country portfolios with confidence and effectiveness. I'm thrilled to be part of this incredible journey!
Today marks a significant milestone in Africa's environmental leadership as the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), launches the inaugural regional training workshop for Operational Focal Points (OFPs) across 23 African nations hailing from the South, East, West and Central Africa. This pioneering initiative is strategically designed to strengthen the capacity of OFPs, ensuring they possess the critical expertise and tools necessary for effective governance, oversight, and strategic management of their environmental portfolios. Through this targeted effort, AWF and GEF are advancing a shared vision where conservation seamlessly integrates into the broader spectrum of Africa’s sustainable development. In his opening remarks, AWF CEO Kaddu Kiwe Sebunya highlighted the profound necessity of embedding conservation firmly within national and regional development frameworks. He stressed that fostering local leadership and strengthening governmental accountability are vital to ensuring meaningful, sustainable environmental stewardship. By empowering OFPs through comprehensive training, this initiative is positioning African leaders to optimize resource utilization, achieve greater project impacts, and foster inclusive, whole-of-government approaches to environmental governance. As GEF enters its 9th replenishment cycle, the continent faces an unprecedented opportunity to redefine its approach to environmental management. With over $6.2 billion invested across 1,800 projects and leveraging an additional $40 billion from diverse stakeholders, including governments and the private sector, since 1991, this initiative represents a transformative commitment towards enhanced accountability, community-driven conservation, and lasting ecological and socioeconomic benefits. AWF remains committed to championing this strategic shift, reinforcing Africa’s leadership role in the global environmental movement. This morning, I had the privilege of welcoming the Global Environment Facility Operational Focal Points from 23 African countries to the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) headquarters for our inaugural regional training workshop. I emphasized that genuine conservation can only thrive when tightly integrated with the cultural, economic, and political aspirations of African communities. Our vision at AWF is clear: conservation is most effective when people own and benefit directly from wildlife and wild lands, shaping development pathways that allow nature and communities to coexist and prosper. During my remarks, I highlighted the critical role of GEF Operational Focal Points as essential catalysts in transforming GEF investments into sustainable outcomes. It’s crucial that these resources align with national environmental and socio-economic priorities, driving integrated solutions across ministries and sectors. The leadership of OFPs extends beyond project oversight—they are advocates ensuring conservation strategies resonate with the aspirations of local communities, youth, women, and the private sector. As Africa stands at the threshold of the GEF’s 9th replenishment cycle, this workshop presents an unparalleled opportunity to set a new standard for environmental governance. It is a strategic forum for high-level dialogue, collaboration, and the development of capacity-building frameworks designed to amplify Africa’s collective voice and optimize resource allocation. Through this initiative, we aim to advance conservation strategies that holistically support ecological integrity and socio-economic resilience, securing a sustainable and thriving future for both people and nature across the continent.
