GO COMMENTARY WEEKLY: CLI TOOLS & THE PENDULUM SWINGING BACK TO TERMINALS Welcome to this week's Go Commentary by Phat Nguyen (backend engineer), where we explore how the Go ecosystem is embracing a CLI renaissance with tools for Kubernetes, REST APIs, and full-text terminal readers. 1/ `kl`: Interactive Kubernetes Log Viewer - This interactive log viewer for Kubernetes lets you monitor multiple containers, pods, and clusters from your terminal. It’s efficient, but it does make you wonder: Why isn't this built into `kubectl` itself? 2/ Restish: A CLI for RESTful APIs - Restish aims to be a streamlined way to interact with REST APIs, even if `curl` and `HTTPie` already do the job. It's a slick tool, but maybe we need to question if we’re over-complicating things just to add another shiny tool to our stack. 3/ `cast-text`: A Terminal-Based Full-Text News Reader - Brings back RSS feed reading to your terminal, making you feel like it's 1999 again but in a good way. It’s the kind of back-to-basics experience that reminds you why the terminal is still a developer's best friend. Reflection: Moving Forward by Looking Back - There’s comfort in these CLI tools, and they are a reminder of a simpler time. Yet, we can't ignore that these new text-based tools come with their complexities, hiding layers beneath their minimalist surface. Why is #Thanos needed in Prometheus? Scaling prometheus for large-scale applications can be challenging, especially when dealing with hundreds of clusters. Major challenges with prometheus: - Disk space requirements: Prometheus stores time-series data, which can grow very large very quickly in large-scale environments. - Cost: As data volume increases, so does the cost of storage and compute resources. - Data retention: Keeping data for long periods (beyond the typical 15 days) becomes increasingly difficult and expensive. - Query performance: As data grows, query performance can degrade, especially for long-range queries. Thanos addresses these limitations by enabling long-term storage, global querying, and high availability, making it an ideal solution for scaling Prometheus.
