Don Wehby Honoured as 2025 GKMS/Western Union CHAMPS ICON for Transformative Impact on Jamaica’s Premier Athletic Event GraceKennedy Money Services (GKMS)/Western Union has named retired GraceKennedy Group CEO, The Honourable Don Wehby, OJ, CD, as the 2025 GKMS/WU ICON at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Championships (CHAMPS). The announcement was made during a special ceremony at CHAMPS on Friday afternoon, which highlighted Wehby’s legacy as both a former athlete and a transformative corporate leader. The prestigious recognition also celebrates Wehby’s unparalleled contributions to the event’s growth and global prominence and the development of sports in Jamaica. Wehby’s connection to CHAMPS dates back to his student-athlete days, when he competed as a hurdler for St. George’s College from 1977 to 1982. His achievements on the track—including a Class 3 100-metre hurdles title in 1978 and silver medals in the 110-metre and open 400-metre hurdles in 1982—laid the foundation for his lifelong passion for the event. Wehby’s leadership of GraceKennedy as Group CEO solidified his legacy as a driving force behind CHAMPS' continued success. Under his stewardship, GraceKennedy deepened its commitment, investing over US$1 million annually—its largest sponsorship investment globally. His unwavering support was evident in his personal involvement, attending nearly every CHAMPS launch and never missing a Saturday final. “Don Wehby’s vision and dedication have been instrumental in elevating CHAMPS to international recognition,” said Grace Burnett, President and CEO of GraceKennedy Money Services. “His belief in the power of youth and sport has not only transformed this event but has also inspired countless young athletes across Jamaica. We are honoured to celebrate his extraordinary contributions.” Margaret Campbell, Chief Operating Officer of GKMS, echoed these sentiments: “Don’s passion for CHAMPS was undeniable. He understood the profound impact this event has on our youth and our nation. Under his leadership, GraceKennedy’s support went beyond sponsorship—it became a true partnership focused on fostering excellence and empowering the next generation.” The GKMS/WU ICON award honours individuals whose dedication and passion have left an enduring mark on CHAMPS, inspiring future generations of athletes. At the ceremony Wehby was represented by his executive assistant of 23 years, Mrs. Camile Mundell Barrett. During the presentation emcee Ryan Dixon reflected on Wehby’s journey from young athlete to corporate leader. Wehby has had a distinguished career as a Chartered Accountant, Government Minister, Senator, and CEO of one of the Caribbean’s largest and most dynamic conglomerates, which serves as a powerful example of how discipline and determination can shape a remarkable future. Wehby, who retired as GraceKennedy’s Group CEO in February 2025 was bestowed the Order of Jamaica, by the Government of Jamaica in 2024.
