The INSPIREE project is honored to have been selected as part of the European Union's strategic initiatives to enhance the #recycling and sourcing of #criticalrawmaterials, including rare earth elements. Recently, the European Commission unveiled a list of 47 strategic projects aimed at strengthening the EU’s recycling capacity, and INSPIREE is one of only four projects in Italy focusing on critical raw material recycling. With the Critical Raw Materials Act, the EU aims to meet 25% of its critical raw materials demand from recycling by 2030. INSPIREE is directly contributing to this goal by enhancing the recycling of rare earth elements used in permanent magnets, a key component for green energy solutions like wind turbines and electric vehicles. 💡 By scaling up the recycling of rare earth elements, INSPIREE will support the EU's green and digital transitions, advancing Europe’s defense and aerospace industries, while fostering the circular economy. INSPIREE aims to build Europe's first industrial-scale plant for the recovery of Rare Earths from permanent magnets
Chi siamo
INSPIREE (Industrial Production of mixed Rare Earth Elements oxides and carbonates from spent magnets recycling) is a project funded by CINEA (the European Climate, Environment and Infrastructure Executive Agency) under the LIFE Programme. The 42-months project (October 2023-March 2027) aims to build Europe's first industrial plant for the recovery of Rare Earths (REEs) from permanent magnets (PMs) extracted from end-of-life hard disks and electric motors, thanks to the experience gained within the New-RE project (funded by EIT RawMaterials). The consortium formed by Itelyum (the project coordinator), EIT RawMaterials, Erion, Glob Eco, and Università degli Studi dell'Aquila will develop a two-level process for the disassembly of PMs (Level I) and the recovery of REE oxalates by hydrometallurgy (Level II). Glob Eco's Level I plant will have a dismantling capacity of 1,000 tons/year of electric rotors, while Itelyum's Level II plant will treat 2,000 tons/year of PMs, resulting in the recovery of about 700 tons/year of REE oxalates, which could be commercialized even before the end of the project, given the interest already shown by some of the key players in the chain. The ultimate goal of INSPIREE is to consolidate the value chain related to the recycling of REE-PMs and to promote the circularity of Rare Earths in Europe. --- P.N. 101113882 – LIFE22-ENV-IT-INSPIREE Co-funded by the European Union. At FUTURA. Economia x l'ambiente, our partner Erion took the stage at the IBS Consulting & ACF stand to discuss how European funding supports the transition to a circular economy. Speaking at the panel “LIFE Programme and Other National and Regional Instruments Supporting the Circular Economy,” Erion presented INSPIREE, as an example of how EU funding can drive research and innovation, aligning with Europe's sustainability goals. #circulareconomy #WEEE #RareEarths Project supporter: LIFE Programme Project partners: ITELYUM EIT RawMaterials Erion Glob Eco Srl Università degli Studi dell'Aquila

⏪ A few days before the kick-off event, INSPIREE was featured in the E-Waste World Conference & Expo 2024, one of the major international events dedicated to discussing new strategies and solutions for #ewaste #recycling. Our partner Erion flew to Frankfurt to present the project within three different panels: 🎤 “Insights into EPR and Takeback Schemes for E-Waste Management”; 🎤 “Critical Raw Materials in e-waste: developing innovative recycling value chains”; 🎤 “Activating the Circular Economy to Balance Rare Earth Demand”.
