The WWEELab Research Group, coordinated by Prof. Fatone, manages several research projects funded by the main EU research programmes: HORIZON 2020, PRIMA Initiative, WATER JPI, LIFE, ENI CBC MED, Climate-KIC COSME. Also manages several applied research projects, commissioned by waste and wastewater utilities and public authorities. The research fields can be divided into the following 5 macro-areas: - Resource recovery technologies in the urban water cycle. - Stormwater treatment and management. - Digital solutions for carbon footprinting and environmental/economic assessment. - Advanced water and wastewater treatment. - Organic waste treatment and valorisation.

🚨 New Publication Alert | Turning Wastewater into a Green Resource! 🌱💧 We're excited to share our latest scientific article: “Indigenous microalgae consortium for producing safe reclaimed water and bio-fertilisers. 📰 New Publication Alert | Advancing Sustainable Resource Recovery from Sewage Sludge! We’re excited to share our latest article: “Resource recovery strategies and schemes: A regional case study on sewage sludge hub centres in Italy” Published in the Journal of Water Process Engineering Read here : https://lnkd.in/dxuGWTmE This study investigates the sustainability and environmental impact of a centralised sludge treatment hub serving 52 municipalities and 500,000 residents in Treviso, Italy. Key contributions: ♻️ Evaluation of sludge quality and potential for safe reuse ⚙️ Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of valorisation pathways: compost, biogas, phosphorus salts & biopolymers (PHA) 🌍 Results show phosphorus and PHA recovery as the most sustainable option – reducing emissions equivalent to 176 people per day! This research, rooted in the Horizon 2020 SMART-Plant project, provides a replicable model for non-metropolitan areas striving for safe and efficient sludge valorisation, in line with the new Sewage Sludge Directive.
