Konnichiwa from Expo 2025 Osaka 🇯🇵🇩🇪 Yesterday I had the opportunity to be part of the official opening of Expo 2025 Osaka – a global stage to explore how we can shape the future of life. A great exhibition full of inspiration on how to make sustainable life visibile and measurable. Let me start with the excellent German Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka titled #WaGermany, a remarkable showcase of how architecture, sustainability, and innovation can come together in a meaningful and immersive experience. Designed by LAVA (Laboratory for Visionary Architecture) and brought to life by a consortium led by Koelnmesse GmbH, facts and fiction GmbH, GL events the pavilion is a physical and conceptual expression of circular economy. It features recyclable materials, cylindrical structures in wood and steel, and an inviting public park that fosters dialogue between people and nature. The exhibition cleverly uses elements of Japanese culture – like “kawaii” – to translate complex topics into engaging and accessible narratives. Visitors are taken on an emotional and educational journey through Germany’s approach to sustainable transformation. A special acknowledgment goes to Patrick Specht Commissioner General, and Christopher Hecker, Pavilion Director, whose leadership turned a bold vision into a built experience that truly reflects Germany’s commitment to a better future. Excited to be speaking in Fab City Foundation's Regenerative Cities & Engaged Communities roundtable. The talk forms part of a collection of Fab City Roundtables exploring Design Thinking & Innovation, and the PENCE program, whose focus is on Engaging Citizens for Climate Action and Sustainable Solutions 🌍 I’ll be talking about Nature-Based Solutions, and the combination of Nature and technology to move from sustainable to regenerative (Nature-positive) design 🌿 Also on the panel will be Andrea Balestrini, who’ll be touching on Nature-Based Solutions with a focus on community and citizen engagement, building on multiple projects with LAND and the LAND Research Lab. 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝟒𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤   Last Friday, during 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤, had the pleasure of organizing and moderating the Design4Future Talk at LAND Wunderkammer.   Grateful to have shared the stage with brilliant minds: Jens Hoffmann Hoffman, COO of LAND Randa A. Mahmoud, Dean of the College of Architecture and Design at Prince Sultan University, Riyadh Giovanna Iannantuoni, President of Italian Rectors’ Conference, Rector of Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca Luisa Collina, Vice President of Fondazione Politecnico di Milano and Full Professor at the Design Faculty, Politecnico di Milano    The event highlighted the importance of design new process and rules for flexible and adaptive spaces that integrate #Nature, technology and innovation making it accessible to all, while emphasizing the need for critical thinking in design. This includes not only human needs but also the more-than-human perspective. The awareness that the spaces we create impact not only us but also the surrounding ecosystem is essential.   We explored how artificial intelligence (#AI), augmented reality (#AR), and virtual reality (#VR) are powerful tools that can accelerate design processes, creating immersive experiences that support positive sustainability outcomes and enhance the quality of life for those living in environments shaped by adaptive, flexible spaces.   #Design4Future was a valuable exchange among designers, architects, technologists, and innovators, united by the goal of creating adaptive, inclusive spaces for a fast-changing, interconnected world. Nature and technological innovation stood at the centre of the conversation, focusing on how these two forces can collaborate to build fairer, more sustainable, and liveable cities. 🌱 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞? Arriving in Japan for the opening of Expo 2025 Osaka, themed "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," I find myself reflecting on how these global mega-events have evolved. They are much more than temporary exhibitions: they have become powerful catalysts of transformation, reshaping their host cities and reconnecting communities with nature. From the pioneering eco-districts born from Hannover 2000 to the enduring legacy of Expo Milano 2015, now thriving as the MIND Innovation District, and from Dubai 2020 with its visionary approach to pre-cultivation, to our ongoing projects for Riyadh 2030, these experiences continue to deepen our understanding of resilience, especially in extreme climates, and teach us valuable lessons in creating truly sustainable environments. As landscape architects, our role goes beyond simply designing green spaces—we must actively cultivate lasting, meaningful change for future generations. 𝟑𝟓 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢 𝐝𝐢 𝐩𝐚𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐢, 𝟑𝟓 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢 𝐝𝐢 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞. Un grazie di cuore a tutte e tutti coloro che oggi hanno partecipato alla presentazione del #NatureFactoryManifesto in occasione della #MilanoDesignWeek. Il manifesto che abbiamo presentato oggi con Josef Nierling e il team di Porsche Consulting nasce da un’urgenza che non possiamo più ignorare in un dialogo sempre più necessario tra pubblico e privato. Grazie alla piattaforma del World Economic Forum, abbiamo potuto delineare una visione che mette la natura al centro – non più altrove, ma accanto a noi – come pilastro dello sviluppo economico. Un’azione che genera valore economico, ma soprattutto valore urbano, sociale e culturale. Quando con Giovanni Sala abbiamo fondato LAND nel 1990, ci siamo presi la responsabilità – e il privilegio – di essere fiduciari del paesaggio, inteso come bene comune. Siamo convinti che non basti più porsi domande: servono risposte, servono ponti. Ponti tra istituzioni e imprese, tra mondi diversi, tra persone. E la natura, ancora una volta, può e deve essere il punto d’incontro. Con il Nature Factory Manifesto vogliamo proporre un nuovo mindset: ogni progetto può essere anche una produzione di natura. La nuova narrativa è la natura. Attraverso la natura possiamo progettare il futuro con umiltà, consapevoli dei nostri limiti, ma anche animati dalla volontà di agire. Perché ogni nostra azione ricade su un unico conto: quello del nostro pianeta.
