🌎🍽️ Did you know that bananas, potatoes, tomatoes, and rice all came to Europe from other continents? Throughout history, we've embraced new flavours and nutrients from around the globe, making them new staples in our kitchens. Even though we have more diverse choices than ever, before any novel food can be sold in the EU, it must undergo a rigorous authorisation process, including a thorough safety assessment. This ensures that every new addition to our diets is safe. Learn more about how novel foods are evaluated and approved 👉 https://lnkd.in/erBUMXn6 #Safe2EatEU

Trusted Science for Safe Food
Chi siamo
Science, safe food, sustainability. EFSA is a decentralised agency of the European Union with headquarters in Parma, Italy. The agency was set up in 2002 following a series of food crises in the late 1990s to be a source of scientific opinions and advice on risks associated with the food chain. Our work forms the basis for the European policies and legislation in the food safety area. Our scientific remit covers: food and feed safety, nutrition, animal health and welfare, plant protection, plant health, and the possible impact of the food chain on the biodiversity of plant and animal habitats. EFSA employs around 565 staff members and works alongside over 1500 external experts. If you are interested in a career at EFSA and wish to contribute to food safety in Europe find more about our work and how to engage with EFSA here on LinkedIn or on our website. Are you familiar with novel foods? 🍠Here are some facts: 👉 In the EU, a food is classified as novel if it wasn't commonly eaten before 1997. This category includes traditional foods from other countries, new ingredients, and foods from innovative sources like algae and microorganisms. What’s more, novel foods are also made possible by new technologies such as nanotechnology, cell culture, and UV-treatment. Thanks to the rigorous safety checks by EU scientists, these foods are safe to enjoy and are changing our diets.
