New U.S. Tariffs Starting April 2025: What Changes for Imports into the USA? A new Executive Order issued on April 2, 2025, introduces a 10% reciprocal tariff on all imports into the United States, along with additional tariffs targeting countries with significant trade surpluses with the U.S. Here’s what’s changing—and what it could mean for exporters: 📅 Effective April 5, 2025: 🔸 A flat 10% tariff will apply to all imported goods 📅 Effective April 9, 2025: 🔺 As of today, specific ad valorem duty rates apply to goods imported from 57 countries. Here are a few examples: 🇨🇳 China: 34% 🇻🇳 Vietnam: 46% 🇹🇼 Taiwan: 32% 🇯🇵 Japan: 24% 🇮🇳 India: 26% 🇹🇭 Thailand: 36% 🇪🇺 European Union: 20% 🇨🇭 Switzerland: 31% 📌 Exemptions apply to: ✔️ Items already covered under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 (e.g., steel and aluminum) ✔️ Products listed in Annex II of the Executive Order, including copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and lumber 👉 What does this mean for your business? If your company exports to the U.S., these changes could significantly impact costs and logistics planning. To assess your exposure, you'll need to review all imported products, identify their HTS codes, and determine the country of origin for each item. From there, apply the new tariff rates and consider any applicable exemptions, such as U.S.-origin content.
