The Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research centre on climate science and policy
Chi siamo
The Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research centre on climate science and policy. The CMCC: - Integrates all studies on climate change and adaptation/mitigation policies - Promotes collaboration and synergy with international organisations, policy makers, and industry - Provides technical-scientific support to the institutions involved in the negotiation and international cooperation activities. CMCC produces thorough studies regarding climate variability, causes, and consequences, through the development of high-resolution simulations based on global models of Earth systems and regional models, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean area. CMCC's research assures the maintenance of highly reliable products and instruments, which are made available to the scientific community and to further studies on climate science and climate change impacts. CMCC maintains, checks, and develops numeric model simulations, which are used to study the effects of climate change on the following areas: economy, agriculture, coastal areas, marine and land environment, hydrogeological cycle, carbon cycle and human health.

💧 Water is life. But it’s also economy, culture, and identity Especially in regions like #Puglia, where agriculture is not just a productive sector, but a cornerstone of the local society and landscape 🌾🇮🇹 A new study has just been published — which I co-authored together with paola mercogliano and Roberta Padulano — exploring how climate change is influencing irrigation demand in one of Italy’s most agricultural regions. You can read it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/drg7rFxz. 📈 Shifts in growing cycles, changing rainfall patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events are already putting pressure on Puglia’s agricultural systems. The paper provides an overview of current irrigation practices, water management challenges, and potential adaptation strategies to move toward a more resilient and sustainable future. 🙏 A heartfelt thank you to Acquedotto Pugliese SpA for their valuable support and collaboration throughout the project. Their expertise and commitment were key to the success of this work. Grateful as well to everyone who generously shared their time, knowledge, and resources to make this research possible. 👉 It’s time to rethink how we manage water — not just as a technical resource, but as a common good to protect, now more than ever. #water #agriculture #climatechange #sustainability #Puglia #southregions #Italy #resilience #irrigation #watermanagement CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici

Join us on April 9, 2025 for the Adaptation AGORA webinar "Citizen engagement in climate adaptation processes: lessons learned from Adaptation AGORA and CLIMAS’ experiences" #CitizenEngagement is one of the key factors to ensure successful climate change risk adaptation strategies and plans, however decision-makers and practitioners often find it difficult to truly generate an interest and proactive participation from the individuals living in their regions. Two Horizon Europe projects, CLIMAS and Adaptation AGORA have been focusing on implementing specific frameworks and methodologies to generate greater interest, engagement and deliver co-creation, co-production, co-design and co-implementation of climate change adaptation processes. #News | AI improves seasonal predictions of extreme tropical Atlantic events New research led by CMCC researcher Marie-Lou Bachelery, harnesses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict extreme Atlantic Niño and Benguela Niño events up to 3 months in advance. This offers an unprecedented opportunity to safeguard marine ecosystems and local economies, whilst also laying the groundwork for future applications on other hard-to-predict phenomena worldwide. "Global Harms, Local Profits: How the Uneven Costs of Natural Disasters Affect Support for Green Political Platforms" 🌐 CMCC Talks 📅 10 April 2025, 12:00 CEST 🎙️ With Silvia Pianta and Cristina Cattaneo, CMCC Extreme events are becoming increasingly common due to climate change. While conventional wisdom suggests that firsthand experiences with natural disasters foster green coalitions by raising awareness of environmental degradation, we propose an alternative view: natural disasters can heighten the perceived trade-off between economic development and environmental policies. This study examines the case of Brazil, where large-scale fires, by clearing natural vegetation, create new opportunities for land grabbing and the expansion of agriculture and livestock production. Using satellite, administrative, and electoral data, we show that large-scale fires increase support for green candidates only in municipalities unlikely to gain economically from the fires. Survey data further indicates that voters prioritize environmental protection over economic growth only when they stand to receive limited or no benefit from the newly cleared land. Our findings suggest that the potential for natural disasters to foster green coalitions is contingent upon their distributive effects. Register to attend: https://ow.ly/pzYy50VpAHS
