Earth System Models are the main tools scientists use to study and improve our understanding of the climate system and project #climatechange. However, even the best models still exhibit uncertainties in their projections. New research led by CMCC, in collaboration with Columbia University, UC Irvine, and Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) e.V. German Aerospace Center - German Aerospace Center (DLR), introduces a novel method that reduces uncertainties in near-surface air temperature projections by up to 54% compared to state-of-the-art approaches, making predictions more precise and reliable. This can help provide better guidance for governments and communities in planning effective adaptation and mitigation strategies to meet the challenges posed by climate change. The Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research centre on climate science and policy
Chi siamo
The Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research centre on climate science and policy. The CMCC: - Integrates all studies on climate change and adaptation/mitigation policies - Promotes collaboration and synergy with international organisations, policy makers, and industry - Provides technical-scientific support to the institutions involved in the negotiation and international cooperation activities. CMCC produces thorough studies regarding climate variability, causes, and consequences, through the development of high-resolution simulations based on global models of Earth systems and regional models, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean area. CMCC's research assures the maintenance of highly reliable products and instruments, which are made available to the scientific community and to further studies on climate science and climate change impacts. CMCC maintains, checks, and develops numeric model simulations, which are used to study the effects of climate change on the following areas: economy, agriculture, coastal areas, marine and land environment, hydrogeological cycle, carbon cycle and human health.

#reminder | Join us tomorrow for a new event of the #CMCCTalks series ⤵️ "Global Harms, Local Profits: How the Uneven Costs of Natural Disasters Affect Support for Green Political Platforms" 📅 10 April 2025, 12:00 CEST 🎙️ With Silvia Pianta and Cristina Cattaneo, CMCC Extreme events are becoming increasingly common due to climate change. While conventional wisdom suggests that firsthand experiences with natural disasters foster green coalitions by raising awareness of environmental degradation, we propose an alternative view: natural disasters can heighten the perceived trade-off between economic development and environmental policies. This study examines the case of Brazil, where large-scale fires, by clearing natural vegetation, create new opportunities for land grabbing and the expansion of agriculture and livestock production. Using satellite, administrative, and electoral data, we show that large-scale fires increase support for green candidates only in municipalities unlikely to gain economically from the fires. Survey data further indicates that voters prioritize environmental protection over economic growth only when they stand to receive limited or no benefit from the newly cleared land. Our findings suggest that the potential for natural disasters to foster green coalitions is contingent upon their distributive effects. Register to attend: https://ow.ly/pzYy50VpAHS

The interaction between humans and the natural environment is key to understanding both our impact on the planet and how a changing climate will shape our lives and economic activities. Science and innovation play a crucial role in this process, helping to build resilience and strengthen early warning systems. From forecasting El Niño months in advance to anticipating cyclones and streamflow extremes, artificial intelligence is reshaping the way we understand and respond to climate risks. In this #CMCCupdates issue, we dive into cutting-edge research and projects where CMCC scientists are using AI to close the gap between knowledge and action — transforming early warning systems, enhancing climate resilience, and ultimately strengthening the link between science, society, and the natural world. ⤵️ #AI #artificialintelligence #climatescience #climateresearch #climateforecast #climaterisks #climateresilience #resilience #extremeevents #CYCLOPS #CLINT #MEDEWSA Marie-Lou Bachelery Leone Cavicchia Antonello Squintu Italo Epicoco CLINT - Climate Intelligence MedEWSa project

"Disinformation and Climate Adaptation" 🌐 Adaptation AGORA webinar 📅 23 April 2025, h. 16:40-18:10 The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report highlights the harmful impact of #disinformation on #climateaction, stating that “disinformation resulting in public misperception of climate risks is delaying urgent adaptation planning and implementation.” Addressing climate disinformation is crucial to empowering people of all generations to take meaningful action on adaptation. In this context, the Adaptation AGORA project is co-organizing an online webinar in collaboration with TU Environmental Initiative (TUUWI). During the webinar, Paula Gori from European Digital Media Observatory will introduce the topic, laying the foundation for a discussion on how disinformation shapes public perception and understanding of climate change. The event will bring together students from universities in Sweden and Germany, offering them the opportunity to explore the Adaptation AGORA projectand discover its innovative tools, designed to engage citizens in an educational and interactive way.
