CESJ’s Fabio Turone spoke about the FRONTIERS #science #journalism #residencies — funded by the European Research Council (ERC) — with Sara Urbani of the #enjoi project on #science #communication. «Since the first draft, we have made efforts to make sure that the project would serve and support science journalists and protect their independence as a way to serve society at large. So from the very beginning, we tried to anticipate and, as much as possible, mitigate the risk of clashes by ensuring that the journalist was also accepted in their role as a "watchdog" and not just as a "cheerleader" (as a 2009 Nature editorial put it). Science journalists are often a bit of a cheerleader because they are passionate and find stories that are beautiful, interesting, and important for their investigation and for the tangible results they can bring to society. However, quite often, they are perceived only in this role, while they also have the social function of watchdogs.» https://lnkd.in/gzgrCYhD

Better science and better journalism for a healthier democracy
Chi siamo
The Center for Ethics in Science and Science Journalism (CESJ) is a non-profit organization launched in 2016 in Milan (Italy) to foster research, public debate and education activities – for both journalists and scientists – on science and science journalism and communication. In its first years of activity, CESJ focused on how to cover science-related issues, and especially controversies, in a responsible, ethical way. CESJ is directed by Fabio Turone, science journalist who in 2016-2017 was research fellow at the MIT Knight Science Journalism program in Boston, and scientific director Daniela Ovadia, who in addition to working in science journalism has been participating in several EU-funded projects and teaches “Ethics of research and responsible research and innovation” at University of Pavia.

One of the fellows from the FRONTIERS project has recently started her adventure at Institute of Science and Technology Austria. Congratulations Giorgia Guglielmi, PhD! Keep us posted on your amazing project! #FRONTIERSFellows #sciencejournalism #FRONTIERS #FrontierScience
As part of my European Research Council (ERC)-funded FRONTIERS Fellowship, I’m excited to start exploring a fascinating question at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria: How do living systems—from developing embryos to animal colonies—self-organize to achieve structure and function? At ISTA, I’ll engage with researchers approaching this phenomenon from diverse angles, broadening my perspective on how complex systems come to life. Looking forward to the discussions ahead! Huge thanks to Andreas Rothe & the ISTA Communications Team for the warm welcome. #FRONTIERSFellow

📖 Samuel Schlaefli’s article on the collapsing Danish fjord ecosystems has now been translated and republished in English in the Green European Journal. During his residency at Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS) - Aarhus University, Samuel explored the environmental cost of intensive pig farming in Danish fjords and the growing civil society movement demanding change. 🔹 Read Samuel's investigative story “A Landscape of Greed” ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dXNVAeTm #ClimateChange #FjordConservation #Denmark #Sustainability #Farming #FRONTIERSFellowship #FRONTIERSresidencies #FRONTIERSfellow #sciencejournalism #frontierscience
🎉 My article on the decaying ecosystem of the Danish fjords has been translated and republished in the Green European Journal (👉 read it here: https://lnkd.in/eQ5Afv_T). 👉 During my FRONTIERS fellowship in Denmark and through many discussions with my colleagues at Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS) - Aarhus University, I learned that although the country is generally seen as a climate champion when it comes to energy and mobility, this is not the case for its agriculture. Intensive pig farming is a major contributor to Denmark's carbon footprint and has left the country's fjords in an alarming state. 👉 Decades of pollution have depleted the waters of oxygen and marine life is in steep decline. This worrying situation is largely due to the government's slow response to unsustainable farming practices. Some experts say the ecosystem is now collapsing under the weight of excessive nitrogen run-off and climate change. 👉 Meanwhile, industry lobbies have been influencing policy decisions. A striking example came in 2016, when then Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen struck a deal with the agricultural lobby to relax fertiliser restrictions. The result: falsified pollution figures that falsely signalled compliance with EU standards. 🙂 But there is hope. Local activists and fishermen are rallying to demand action. "For the first time, we have a strong civil society in Denmark campaigning to protect the fjords," says Kaare Manniche Ebert, a leading voice in the movement. 🙏 Special thanks to Kaare Manniche Ebert from the Danish Sport Fishing Association for sharing his experience as a fisherman and biologist, to ecologist Stiig Markager for his expertise and commitment to protecting fjord ecosystems, and to Lotte Skade for her openness in discussing the challenges of running a pig farm in a cost-driven, neo-liberal environment. #EnvironmentalJournalism #ClimateChange #FjordConservation #Denmark #Sustainability #Farming #FRONTIERSFellowship Picture: Michael Drost-Hansen

I really appreciated the variety of points of view today at the round table on #Precision #medicine, innovative #drugs, technological #innovation at the end of the second day of the #World #Health #Forum #Veneto in #Padova. I am really glad that so many people remained so late even after the end of the event to express appreciation for my short presentation on the importance of a strong and competent journalism and the #values behind our FRONTIERS project, part of the European Research Council (ERC)’s #Science #Journalism #Initiative. Hopefully I was convincing when I paraphrased a famous quote: “Ask not what journalism can do for you. Ask what you can do for journalism”. 📢 Attending the World Health Forum Veneto in Padua 🇮🇹? 💬 Join Fabio Turone, from CESJ Center for Ethics in Science and Journalism, today at 5:30 PM at the Padova Congress Conference Centre for a roundtable on accelerating medical innovation — and the role of science journalism in the coverage of breakthrough research. 🩺 Frontier research is often either overhyped or dismissed. Fabio will bring insights from the #FRONTIERS project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC), to discuss how science journalists can critically assess medical advancements and report with accuracy and integrity. If you’re at the Forum, don’t miss this discussion. #ScienceJournalism #FRONTIERSFellowships #FRONTIERSresidencies #WorldHealthForum #MedicalResearch
Precision #medicine, innovative #drugs, technological #innovation: later this month I will be at the 3-day "#World #Health #Forum #Veneto" in #Padua, where I was invited to take part in a high-profile #roundtable on the #challenges involved in mobilising #investments in order to move rapidly and effectively new innovative solutions from the bench to the bedside. I'll bring the experience we are developing with the FRONTIERS project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC)'s #Science #Journalism #Initiative to support and strenghten #journalists in the task of covering ethically and responsibly #frontier #research, which is too often the subject of excessive #hype or – at the opposite side of the spectrum – outright rejection. The event on Friday 14 march at 5:30 pm at the Padova Congress conference centre, will be moderated by Giorgio Palù and Rosario Rizzuto. I'll be happy to share the floor with Lucia Aleotti (Menarini Group), Francesca Gennari (Therakos Italia), Nicoletta Luppi (MSD Italia), Gaudenzio Meneghesso (Università di Padova), Mons. renzo pegoraro (Pontificia Accademia per la Vita) and my colleague science journalist Chiara Sabelli. I look forward to a very interesting debate. CESJ Center for Ethics in Science and Journalism, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Enspire Science Ltd.

For four months I'll be in higher spheres, between the stars, planets and galaxies. For my FRONTIERS journalist-in-residence project, I'm diving deep into the astronomy research at Leiden Observatory. From a journalistic perspective I'm exploring studies on exoplanets, planet formation, galaxy evolution and other kinds of 'frontier' research. The back of the photo shows the brand-new Gorlaeus building, which houses a large part of the science faculty of Leiden University - it's my base camp during the residency. I'm sitting next to the Einstein Fountain, which refers to the way light moves in the vicinity of a (spinning) black hole. European Research Council (ERC) Universiteit Leiden
