A heartfelt thank you to all the students, teachers, and organisers who joined us at Riciclo Aperto 2025 ♻️ On 9 April, students and teachers visited our Avezzano plant as part of Riciclo Aperto, the initiative organised by Comieco. It was a pleasure to showcase the journey of paper recycling in action, demonstrating how a simple cardboard box can be transformed into new paper products, closing the loop in the circular economy. Engaging with the new generations is key to fostering awareness and responsibility and highlights the importance of education on sustainable practices.

One message does not fit all. When it comes to sustainability, consumers aren’t simply “green” or “not green.” A new international report shared by Two Sides UK reveals four distinct sustainability mindsets: Anxious Inactive – Concerned but overwhelmed by inaction Indifferent – Disengaged and disconnected from sustainability Enthusiast – Highly engaged and eager for sustainable options Minimalist – Focused on reducing consumption and saving resources These findings can be very valuable in developing more effective communication, highlighting the importance of tailoring sustainability messaging to different audiences rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Riciclo Aperto returns from 8 to 11 April to open the doors of Italy’s paper and cardboard recycling chain to students and teachers. On 9 April, Burgo Group’s Avezzano plant will welcome visitors to see firsthand how paper is given new life through recycling ♻️ 📦 A simple cardboard box can become something entirely new—packaging, books, newspapers, and much more—thanks to a well-functioning recycling system. Through guided visits, students will experience the paper cycle and understand how their daily recycling contributes to environmental sustainability. As part of Paper Week 2025, Riciclo Aperto promotes education and awareness about the importance of correct waste separation and sustainable resource management. This initiative is organised by @Comieco, in collaboration with Federazione Carta e Grafica and Unirima, with the support of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, ANCI, and Utilitalia.

The European Commission’s Action Plan for Affordable Energy—a key pillar of the Clean Industrial Deal—aims to reduce structurally high energy costs impacting businesses and consumers. With projected savings of €45 billion in 2025, rising to €260 billion annually by 2040, the plan seeks to: Lower electricity costs and enhance grid efficiency; Expand renewables and strengthen energy security; Improve regulatory conditions for industrial competitiveness. For energy-intensive sectors like paper manufacturing, affordable and stable energy prices are critical to maintaining production efficiency and sustainability goals. What does the Clean Industrial Deal mean for paper-based food packaging? The European Commission’s Clean Industrial Deal aims to strengthen Europe’s industrial base while advancing sustainability. For the paper-based food and food service packaging sector, this could mean: 🔸 Enhanced circularity - With Trans-Regional Circularity Hubs improving fibre-based packaging recycling 🔸 Support for bio-based materials - Reinforcing the role of fibre-based alternatives to fossil-based plastics. 🔸 Regulatory simplification - A step towards a more harmonised EU-wide framework for sustainable packaging. Of course, the success of these measures will also depend on how they are implemented. 🔍 Find out more about the Deal and its implications for the packaging industry in this article by European Paper Packaging Alliance (EPPA) 👉 https://lnkd.in/dVbqXnEB

#CircularChoices is the largest from the forest-based bioeconomy sector at the EU level, uniting 20 trade associations, including Cepi, European Paper Packaging Alliance (EPPA), FEFCO - European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers and Pro Carton - The association of carton and cartonboard manufacturers. This initiative focuses on a comprehensive range of sustainable products and low-fossil manufacturing processes to reduce environmental impact and drive innovation, decarbonisation, and clean industrial growth. The coalition aims to work with the EU institutions to scale up the circular bioeconomy, so that it may make a leading contribution to reaching climate neutrality by 2050. "Go paperless for the planet" is a catchy slogan... that might be a bit too simplistic. While digital communications are often regarded as the greener choice, this is not always the whole story: digital depends on energy-hungry data centres, and the entire lifecycle of electronics needs to be taken into account, with e-waste becoming a growing issue across the globe. Sustainably managed paper is a cornerstone of the circular economy, thanks to responsibly sourced fibres and its high recyclability. It’s important to remember that true sustainability isn’t about choosing sides – it’s about balance and data. If you are curious to learn more about this topic, check the facts about this myth about paper with Two Sides UK 👉 https://lnkd.in/dp7vMWfa

Many consumers still value paper-based communication for its convenience, clarity, and inclusivity—particularly among vulnerable groups with limited digital access. According to a survey by Two Sides UK, 76% of European consumers believe they should be able to choose how they receive communications, while 62% say they should not be charged extra for opting for paper bills or statements. These insights underline the importance of recognising both digital and paper channels as complementary—and putting consumer preferences at the forefront.
