A significant part of #DisasterRiskReduction is #preparedness. The key to reducing loss of life is appropriate baseline assessments and evaluating the best fit for interventions before extreme climate events, such as heat waves. As large regions of India rapidly transition from Yellow to Orange alerts, issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, SEEDS and partners are gearing up for the sweltering months. In homes in the informal settings of North West Delhi, roofs that heat up during the day make the homes the most unsafe for those in them. #AnticipatoryAction #DisasterResilience #ClimateResilience #Resilience #DisasterPreparedness #CapacityBuilding #EarlyAction #31YearsOfResilience #NewDelhi #UnderTheUmbrella #Heatwave #Microsoft #MicrosoftIndia #MSFTAdvocate #MicrosoftLife National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)INDIA National Institute of Disaster Management Microsoft Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies Clare Ballantine Hannah Torkington H&M Group htparekhfoundation Gunjan Patel Kishore Kumar Thangavelu Bittu Malik Meghna C. Jigmat Norbu, of Jigmat Couture, links farms to fashion, closely working with the Changpa community. He sources wool from the Changpa nomadic herders to make pashmina shawls that have travelled the world. His understanding of climatic conditions often comes from the herders’ observations of the landscape and their livestock’s experiences. Looking back at the winter that just went by, he expresses his warm appreciation to the community that has given the world a lot through its own experiences in one of the planet’s harshest climates. #AnticipatoryAction #DisasterResilience #ClimateResilience #Resilience #DisasterPreparedness #CapacityBuilding #TogetherWeFuture #31YearsOfResilience #Changpa #LadakhWinter #StayWarm #Ladakh #Leh

Kunzang, known as the Changpa Boyz, is from the Changthang region. He sought their stories as SEEDS and LNP rolled out an anticipatory action plan to help the Changpa tribes this past winter. His on-the-ground video helped the world understand how the Changpa experience life in the winters. Here he is, speaking the language of the community, expressing his admiration for their resilience. #AnticipatoryAction #DisasterResilience #ClimateResilience #Resilience #DisasterPreparedness #CapacityBuilding #TogetherWeFuture #31YearsOfResilience #Changpa #LadakhWinter #StayWarm #Ladakh #Leh #ChangpaBoyz

When the mercury rises, so do the risks Extreme #heat is no longer just a matter of discomfort. It’s quietly becoming a #public #health emergency, especially for the most #vulnerable. As climate patterns shift, they affect all, but not equally. The question is whether our cities can #protect the most #vulnerable during these heat waves. #Resilient, inclusive, and future-ready ecosystems are an urgent need. Here is the case for how heat affects pregnant #women and #children. Read this to know more. https://lnkd.in/dRuBY_fF Manu Gupta Shalaka Kumar Divya Gupta Yezdani Rahman Arijit D. Raj Shankar Ghosh

About five years ago, Sam Mohan, the renowned photographer who founded Yolk Studio, set off to experience Ladakh. A few months later, he completed building his house by hand from mud and stone. Today, that is what he calls his second home. He has lived with the Changpa community and brings an urban Indian perspective that he has already shared with you in an earlier post. This is his message to the tribal nomadic community living in the icy desert of Ladakh, extolling how we can learn resilience from them in extreme weather. #AnticipatoryAction #DisasterResilience #ClimateResilience #Resilience #DisasterPreparedness #CapacityBuilding #TogetherWeFuture #31YearsOfResilience #Changpa #LadakhWinter #StayWarm #Ladakh #Leh

Disasters and women - why numbers matter Gender-disaggregated data in #DisasterRiskReduction is a top priority worldwide. The 2024 United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Gender Action Plan highlights #gender #analysis as a key tool for disaster response. More than 77 countries participate in these efforts. Oxfam’s 2023 report also emphasises the need for better gender data in humanitarian response (Oxfam 2023). In recent years, significant progress has been made in collecting and using gender-disaggregated data (GDD) to improve #disasterpreparedness, #response, and recovery. These advancements ensure that #DRR strategies are more #inclusive and responsive to the different needs of men, women, and marginalised groups. SEEDS' Shalini Jain was at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)INDIA UN Women meeting recently, where she spoke about the importance of Gender-disaggregated data in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change for a Meaningful Impact. Apart from the UNDRR Gender Action Plan (2024), other important global instruments are the #Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) and UN Sustainable Development Group Goals three and five. #gender #genderidentity #education #genderroles #woman #mentalhealth #disasterriskreduction #disastermanagement #disaster #drr #climatechange #naturalhazards #undrr #wmo #resilience #unitednations #humanitarian #disasterrelief #cyclones #disasters #floods #earthquakes GNDR India Climate Collaborative NDRF Kerala State Disaster Management Authority Shivangi Chavdaa Manu Gupta Shalaka Kumar Divya Gupta

Protecting pregnant women, infants from heat Women and young children are amongst the most #vulnerable to #heatstrokes. Several years ago, as part of an initiative of the India Humanitarian Hub (IHH), SEEDS contributed to encouraging community-based organisations to build #climate #resilience through local innovation. Through this, Urmul, in collaboration with Samakhya Sustainable Alternatives, repurposed discarded sheep wool by combining indigenous knowledge with technological inputs. Today, the regenerative pastoral wool 'Magra' fibre from Rajasthan offers an effective and eco-friendly option for thermal and acoustic insulation. The solutions support self-reliance, sustainability, and fit within the social systems of local communities. On #WorldHealthDay - 'Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures' - here is a peek into how this innovation can provide insulation for a cool shelter for vulnerable mothers and babies too. SEEDS has earlier built bamboo shelters in Delhi, offering much-needed respite to the city’s most heat-exposed populations - rickshaw pullers, rag pickers, and construction workers. With the #temperatures rapidly rising, using eco-friendly bamboo or 'Magra' fibre, these shelters can leverage the material’s natural cooling properties to create breathable, shaded spaces in urban heat islands. Women and infants are most vulnerable to heat waves - this could be their healthy break from the heat. #HealthyBeginningsHopefulFutures #MaternalHealth #NewbornHealth #WHO #imd #india #heatwave #rajasthanheatwave #himachalpradeshheatwave #saurashtraheatwave #konkan #goa #haryanaheatwave #gujaratheatwave #madhyapradesh National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)INDIA Bihar State Disaster Management Authority H&M Group Clare Ballantine Hannah Torkington @htparekhfoundation Manu Gupta Shalaka Kumar Yezdani Rahman Sumeet Agarwal Parag Talankar Arijit D.
