#CEEWEvents | Strengthening India-US Collaboration on Natural Gas & Nuclear Energy ⚡🤝 CEEW and Hoover Institution, Stanford University hosted a vibrant thought exchange between Indian and US policy and industry experts on natural gas trade and pricing, nuclear energy capacity expansion, tech collaborations and bilateral cooperation. 👉 Key Takeaways: 💡 Natural Gas 🔹 Aggregating gas demand across sectors will support long-term LNG contracts and reduce reliance on volatile spot markets 🔹 Steelmakers need cheaper gas and long-term price visibility (20–30 yrs) to transition effectively 🔹 Gas trading via exchanges can boost demand and enable better price discovery 🔹 LNG for heavy-duty transport is a cost-effective alternative over long distances 🔹 Gas trading via exchanges can boost demand and enable better price discovery 💡 Nuclear Energy 🔹 Securing diversified fuel supply chains essential for India’s 100 GW nuclear capacity target by 2047 🔹 SMRs are gaining traction for niche use — but large reactors needed to meet grid-scale demand 🔹 Local manufacturing of nuclear components can reduce costs and boost scale 🔹 Amendments in the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act can unlock international private investment 🔹 Public trust is key — build awareness of and capacity for nuclear A big thank you to the participants for this timely dialogue! Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) reposted this
The heat is here, and it did not wait for summer. March brought not only heatwaves but also the early arrival of 40°C days. And the heat isn’t just outside—it's in the markets too. For the Indian economy, uncertainty is rising amid the ping-pong of global tariffs. This economic strain mirrors the physical heat stress our cities are facing. They are beginning to understand the need to become resilient. At stake? Productivity, livelihoods, and lives. 📢 The latest edition of This Month At CEEW is out now In this edition, you'll find: ⚡ The 600-GW RE pathway that will help India meet rising power demand 🏙 How we're supporting cities to Odisha build heat resilience 🚗 What India's truck drivers think about going electric 🤝 Our new partnership for circular water and a cleaner Ganga 👩🏻💻 Latest #job opportunities Want to receive the full version right in your inbox? #CEEWEvents | Scaling Productive Use of Renewable Energy This week at the ARE Energy Access Investment Forum 2025 in Uganda, the #PoweringLivelihoods team at CEEW hosted a Solutions Factory workshop on “Scaling Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE): Unlocking Opportunities for South-South Cooperation.” This workshop was supported by the Clean Energy Access Network. 📢 One message rang loud and clear: Cross border collaboration isn’t just valuable—it’s essential. The session brought together rich perspectives from stakeholders across the Global South — from the MEGHALAYA BASIN MANAGEMENT AGENCY (India) and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (Uganda) to OnePower Lesotho, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), SNV Uganda, and many more. Their insights were clear-eyed and focused on what it really takes to scale PURE — from local ownership and innovative finance to ecosystem-building and cross-sector collaboration. Here are five key takeaways from the workshop: 1️⃣ Demand Must Be Created, Not Assumed PURE must align with local livelihoods and markets — infrastructure alone isn’t enough. 2️⃣ Finance Must Reach the Last Mile Blended finance, interest-free loans, microcredit — we need models that de-risk investment and empower end-users. 3️⃣ Communities Must Lead Sustainable impact means shifting power and ownership to the communities— through local energy planning, skills, and co-design. 4️⃣ PURE is Cross-Sectoral It’s about agriculture, enterprise, and everything in between. Ecosystem development is non-negotiable. 5️⃣ South-South Exchange Must Flow Both Ways Indian models are gaining ground in Africa — but reverse learning remains rare. It’s time for two-way learning and regional tech transfer platforms. PURE is not just about technology, or energy — it's about transforming systems, and powering livelihoods. To scale PURE, we must connect communities, capital, and cross-border knowledge. #NewStudy | How are Indian States Enabling Rooftop Solar Adoption? ☀️🏠⚡ India has set a target of 30 GW of rooftop solar (RTS) capacity by 2027. However, RTS adoption is uneven across states, with key policy and regulatory barriers slowing progress. Our latest CEEW study analyses 30 state policies and 29 regulatory frameworks to assess how states can accelerate RTS deployment. Key insights: ✅ Capacity limits make adoption harder – 24 states require a minimum RTS system size of 1 kW, making it harder for low-income households to adopt solar. ✅ Metering policies vary – While most states offer net metering, only a few have group or virtual net metering, which could expand access. ✅ Few financial incentives – Only 7 states offer subsidies for residential RTS, and support for battery storage or new business models is rare. ✅ Governance and transparency differ – 21 states have single-window clearance, but only a handful have dedicated solar cells or robust tracking mechanisms. State policies are key to scaling #RooftopSolar and meeting India’s clean #energy goals. As India looks to develop and decarbonise simultaneously, we must streamline RTS policies and regulations across states. 🔗Read more at https://lnkd.in/g_3FGHNF Bloomberg Philanthropies, Arohi Patil, Kumaresh Ramesh, Bhawna Tyagi

#CEEWEvents | Scaling Rural Micro-businesses: Leveraging Distributed Renewable Energy Technologies⚡ At #SAFDE2025, policymakers, financiers, and rural marketplace enterprises gathered for a vibrant discussion on the successes and aspirations of scaling rural micro-businesses leveraging DRE to create impact at scale. Here are some key takeaways from our Powering Livelihoods panel at the South Asia Forum for Distributed Energy (SAFDE): 🔹 Scaling DRE livelihoods to impact 37 million lives needs strong partnerships, perseverance to build stakeholder trust, and patient capital for long-term growth. 🔹 Rajeshwari S Mallegowda, Director, National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), shared the government's vision to build rural resilience and prosperity, underscoring efforts to support 1 crore entrepreneurs through clean energy integration. 🔹 prince kamboj, Managing Director of Kissan Dharambir, highlighted how DRE tech such as micro food processors are boosting rural incomes, but flagged challenges in financing, awareness, and scheme convergence. 🔹Experts also underscored the need to build aspiration for rural entrepreneurship, backed by a supportive ecosystem of government actors, financiers, impact organisations, B2B lenders, and entrepreneurs themselves. We were also thrilled to launch our latest #PoweringLivelihoods study: "How Decentralised Renewable Energy-powered Technologies Impact Sustainable Livelihoods: Findings from the Ground (2025)", with Ms Rajeshwari S Mallegowda. Drawing from insights of 800+ end-users of 8 DRE technologies across India, the study found that 87% of users reported a typical rise by a third in their annual income after adopting DRE solutions. 🔗 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eHF_v3WN A huge thank you to our hosts—GOGLA, the Good Energies Foundation, and IKEA Foundation—for making #SAFDE2025 a forum for meaningful dialogue and collaboration.
