💡 What is Explainable-AI (XAI)? #XAI is a sub-domain of #artificialintelligence (AI) where the processes behind AI-driven results and decisions are interpretable and understandable, making them transparent and trustworthy for decision making by humans. In our founder's, Prof. Boaz Lerner, contribution to the Machine Learning for Data Science Handbook (2023), he explores how XAI, particularly through #Bayesian network classifiers, helps #AI researchers move beyond traditional statistical models to identify #causal interrelations in complex (healthcare) data. Beyond providing high-accuracy AI prediction models, XAI should be examined for the degree of natural interpretability and explainability they provide - interpretability is understanding the results; the “how” question, and explainability is explaining the results; the “why” question. AI tools are frequently accused of being #blackboxes, sacrificing interpretability in favor of predictability. To enhance #transparency, #auditability, #trustworthiness, and #responsibility, researchers should do their utmost to develop schemes that can help explain the predictions and decisions made by their AI models. Explaining predictions and decisions requires causal discovery, i.e., the identification of causal interrelations among variables (how clinical and biological markers affect trial outcome but also each other!). In highly sensitive domains involving peoples’ lives, e.g., #lifesciences, #healthcare, and #clinicaldevelopment, discovering a causal explanation is critical to creating justification, transparency, trust, and eventually co-operation. The goal of an AI researcher should be that any such causal explanation will be accessible and comprehensible to a human, who may then challenge the explanation until it is fully understood. Key concepts developed by Prof. Lerner include: ●  #CausalDiscovery: Understanding the cause-and-effect relationships among all variables in a #clinicaltrial, rather than just computing (bi-dimensional) correlations or performing causal inference to predict the trial outcome. ●  #Transparency: Offering clear, interpretable #insights about influential clinical factors for stakeholders to make informed decisions. ●  #Accountability: Ensuring that AI models are understandable and trustworthy in clinical settings, e.g., by visualizing and explaining #clinicalpathways, to be able that their developers could accept responsibility for decisions made based on these AI models. He then ventured into the CRO sector, founding a technological service company, and later served as the Director of Innovation in the Novolog Healthcare Group.   Raphael previously served as the company's vice president of strategic partnerships and, thanks to his hard work and impressive accomplishments, he recently gained the board of directors' support to become the company's CEO. His deep understanding of clinical trials, process optimization, and proficiency in leveraging disruptive technologies, SaaS products, and business models align perfectly with Panacea-ML’s mission to de-risk, accelerate, and optimize drug development for the pharmaceutical industry to be more competitive, and for patients to get access to innovative life-saving treatments earlier.   Raphaël’s academic background includes an LL.M. in Healthcare Products and Pharmaceutical Law from La Sorbonne & Paris V University and an MBA in Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Reichmann University.
