About us

Stewarts Care provides a wide range of services that promote the education, wellbeing, dignity, health and happiness of people with an intellectual disability. CHY13177 Working with the people we support and their families, we are committed to developing a broad range of services and supports that help to ensure happy and healthy lifestyles and quality experiences to over 1,200 adults and children. In addition to the care, education and vocational training provided through statutory funding, Stewarts Care strives to present optimum lifestyle choices in the areas of recreation, arts, sport and cultural opportunities which present real choices to those we support. These services are predominantly delivered in the community of Dublin Mid Leinster, in partnership with the Health Service Executive. Working in programmes from pre-school to primary and adult education, we have been fortunate in securing the services of a dedicated and accomplished staff for whom the “family of Stewarts” is a real, vibrant and cherished entity. Stewarts has a proud tradition of innovation in its attitude to the development of residential accommodation for those in our care. Originally (since 1869) Stewarts operated an institutional residence in the historic main hospital on the Palmerstown Campus. In the early 1970's the organisation commenced its community housing programme and now manages in excess of 30 individual community homes spread throughout local communities. Parallel to this initiative, Stewarts built a number of housing units in a village like environment on its main campus in Palmerstown. Current policy is working to support residential accommodation in the community that enables people to experience increased levels of personal independence and meaningful engagement with local communities.

Lorcan spoke of his experience in the Support Independent Living Skills Training Programme in Stewarts Care and how he was supported to where he is now, living independently. As a customer of PTSB, he spoke about his experience of developing his money management skills and the supports he accesses to stay on top of his finances. Nicole spoke about the Supported Independent Living programme in Stewarts and the skills participants learn including how to budget, save and manage money. As part of the Independent Living Training Programme, a representative from PTSB is invited to explain the process of online banking , setting up direct debits and bank accounts. • Congrats to Norma, Rebecca and Carrie from the Liffey Hub who shone brightly last week on Ireland AM, promoting the work of the Connections Arts Centre and their TY Programme. The Creative TY Connections Programme is a creative, innovative, education programme that brings Transition Year Students and adults with intellectual disabilities together to develop their interpersonal, digital and life skills. With four modules Every Day IT, Money Management, Upskilling for Employment and Sustainable Steps, the programme is based on a buddy system between TY students and day attenders from disability services, including Stewarts Care. Speaking on national TV, Stewarts Support Staff, Lynda added "Education is key in everything, and with that comes the Community inclusion piece with the TY Programme. As a Support Staff, I cannot say enough about the TY students [..] and the confidence building of the people we support in Stewarts Care, people are walking taller, dipping their toe, realising I can do this, learning about money management, learning about themselves, [...] perhaps getting a job in the future" And Norma closed the segment in a great interview with Deric Hartigan "I love the programme, my favourite thing is the money (money management) and now I am getting better at that". https://lnkd.in/eA3tF5a7 (*Scroll down to Video 90 or search Connections Arts to find the full segment on the Virgin Media Player)

  • "This Autism Awareness Day, lets create a world that embraces every sensory experience with kindness" That is the message from our Sunflower Programme on #WorldAutismDay This video, created by the day attenders in the Sunflower Programme, and expertly narrated by Ruth, explains what sensory overload can feel like, what might cause sensory overload and some practical ways of supporting someone who is experiencing it. This is a useful way of explaining a concept that not everyone experiences and encouraging understanding. And the message is simple, always treat people with kindness, you never know what someone is experiencing. #WorldAutismDay AsIAm - Ireland’s Autism Charity
