The introduction of the auto-enrolment pension scheme is to be delayed again, with the minister saying it could be a number of months beyond the September commencement date. The hold up has been put down to the amount of administration that is required, and the government’s desire to launch it in alignment with other projects. Finance Minister Jack Chambers confirmed the delay on RTÉ Radio One’s show This Week. A plan to increase workers' statutory sick pay leave from five to seven days have been paused by the Government. The issue was discussed by Cabinet this morning and a decision was taken not to proceed with the proposal. Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke told the Government that certain sectors would be hit hard if the sick leave days were extended. These include the retail and hospitality sectors where research has indicated it could increase payroll costs by up to 0.6% annually. A comprehensive review will continue into impacts and research of Statutory Sick Pay. The government has indicated that the review is aimed at balancing the needs of both employers and employees. While no new timeline has been provided for the increase to seven days, officials have reaffirmed their commitment to the original goal of ten days of paid sick leave by 2026.
