Updates

  • We continue to appeal to the public for assistance in tracing the whereabouts of 56-year-old Michael Gaine who was reported missing from his home near Kenmare, Co. Kerry on Friday, 21 March 2025. If you have any information, please contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station. Superintendent David Callaghan provided an update this morning.

  • ⚠️ An Garda Síochána does not allege criminal activity by phone and will never demand bank details or payment of a fine over the phone. We are aware of a current scam/fraud where a person receives a phone call claiming to be from An Garda Síochána. The caller may say they are investigating the call recipient for a crime and/or that there's a warrant out for their arrest. The caller then demands that the recipient provide their bank account details to pay a fine. These calls come from a variety of international number and Irish mobile numbers - but these calls are entirely fraudulent. We do not and will not make contact with a person under investigation in this way. Our advice to help avoid becoming a victim of fraud: ❌️ Don't respond to any unsolicited call or email seeking personal, financial or security advice ❓️ If you believe the call or email is from a genuine source, verify this independent of the person who has made contact ❓️ Independently verify any requests for information and never use the contact details supplied to you in the fraudulent call or email ❌️ Never click on a link or attachment in an unsolicited email It is very easy to have inadvertently or otherwise engaged with this scam or another similar scam, and subsequently found yourself a victim of fraud - do not hesitate to drop into or call us in your local Garda Station so that we can help. Further guidance on fraud prevention here https://lnkd.in/edsq_39F #KeepingPeopleSafe

  • We will conduct a 24-hour speed enforcement operation nationwide from midnight tonight in partnership with the Road Safety Authority. This will be the second national #SlowDownDay of 2025, and we are asking the public to please support the initiative by slowing down. Even if road and weather conditions are good, any increase in speed increases a driver’s likelihood of being involved in a serious or fatal road traffic collision. With longer periods of daylight we can expect an increase in vulnerable road users, pedestrians and cyclists. We are asking people to have a conversation with those around you about speed, driving safely and helping to make sure everyone using Irish roads arrives home safely. #KeepingPeopleSafe

  • Yesterday, at the Mansion House in Dublin, we marked 100 years since the amalgamation of Póilíní Átha Cliath, previously called the Dublin Metropolitan Police, and An Garda Síochána. It gave us an opportunity to reflect on this amalgamation and to acknowledge and recognise the contribution this made to the growth and development of policing in Ireland.

  • From today onwards it is an offence for any insurance provider or broker to issue a motor insurance policy where the driver number has not been provided. This means that anyone who does not provide the driver number for all named drivers on their policy will not be able to receive motor insurance. The driver number will help deliver greater road safety by providing An Garda Síochána with a more comprehensive insight into any offences a specific driver may have committed.

In 2024, we seized a total of 18,676 vehicles for being uninsured following the introduction of the new Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID) last year. This was up by 67% on 2023. This database was set up to provide the legal authorities with the motor insurance details for all vehicles on Irish roads, allowing us to identify any uninsured vehicles in seconds through our handheld mobile devices or via our Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems. The next phase of the IMID project will see Driver Numbers added to the database. From 31 March 2025 onwards it will be an offence for any insurance provider or broker to issue a motor insurance policy where the driver number has not been provided. This means that anyone who does not provide the driver number for all named drivers on their policy will not be able to receive motor insurance. Every motorist has their own unique Driver Number which stays with them for life. The driver number is an additional data point that will help deliver greater road safety by providing An Garda Síochána with a more comprehensive insight into any offences a specific driver may have committed, making it even more difficult for those who act illegally on Irish roads to evade detection.
