Attending the #ESGinDairySummit today was a valuable experience, with key discussions on water quality, nitrates derogation, and the evolving policy landscape and importance of the Environment Social and Governance to evidence the great work being done, a reoccurring theme amongst panel discussions. While climate change is happening, some speakers alluded to how sustainability priorities seem to be in a pendulum swing. Sustainability does come at a cost (who should pay?) and the co-ops are providing incentives to farmers in this area. Despite some appearances of backtracking from other countries, sustainability remains a priority, and the industry is moving in the right direction. Interim results from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland were positive in the first half 2024 hopefully the trend continued. Consumers continue to ask questions—the dairy sector and others must be able to justify and verify our sustainability efforts. A fantastic event with great insights and networking opportunities.
