Just a few days close to #GlobalRecyclingDay, we hosted 32 undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Institute for the Promotion of Research and Education in Arts, Sciences, and Technology (ARISTEiA) at our cutting-edge wastewater treatment facility unit.
ARISTEiA is a non-profit organization that encompasses the Interdisciplinary School for Environmental Crisis ISEC-3, which brings together leading scientists and students from a variety of academic fields, including #Engineering, #Biosciences, #Medicine, #Law, #Economics, #Business, and #SocialSciences.
During their visit, we presented the Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) unit and highlighted how our in-house #technology and #responsibleproduction focused experts tackle significant environmental challenges with innovative, #sustainable solutions.
Leonidas Kardaras, our Environment Director, elaborated on the sustainable advantages of #aluminum as a key enabler of #circularity. He explained Elval’s responsible environmental practices and stated : ❝We employ a robust, multi-staged advanced wastewater treatment process. The quality of the treated water possesses specific chemical and physical properties that allow it to either be safely discharged into a water-receiving body or be fully recycled back into our production process, resulting in fresh water conservation! Additionally, the solid waste produced during treatment stages is utilized as raw material in another industrial process, promoting a circular economy!❞

A ‘Competitive and decarbonised EU industry in the context of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism #CBAM ’ was discussed at the Competitiveness Council of the European Union, on March 12, 2025.
ELVAL, the aluminium rolling division of ElvalHalcor SA, together with AMAG Austria Metall, Befesa, Constellium, Novelis, RAFFMETAL S.P.A., Speira and TRIMET Aluminium SE, are calling for the aluminium sector to be excluded from the scope of CBAM (and related phasing-out of ETS free allowances) and to work, instead, on a sector-specific carbon leakage tool for aluminium.
At a minimum, if #aluminium stays in the CBAM scope, we call for a tailored approach of CBAM to mitigate its negative impact on our sector. In particular, we call for:
▪️ keeping indirect emissions out of scope for aluminium
▪️ applying a CBAM charge on all imported aluminium products based on a standard value that reflects the CO2 emissions intensity of primary aluminum production to level the playing field. This would also have the advantage of significantly decreasing the administrative burden created by CBAM
▪️ efficient and quick implementation of tools to address circumvention including resource-shuffling
▪️ include downstream products in the scope to mitigate somewhat the carbon leakage risk
▪️ develop an export solution.
ElvalHalcor released its FY’24 financial results, demonstrating operational profitability (a-EBITDA) of EUR 237.5 million. Despite the challenging international economic environment, #ElvalHalcor’s results remained resilient.
Nikolas Carabateas, General Manager of ElvalHalcor’s #Aluminium Segment, stated: ❝The Company’s reinforced competitiveness through implementing the investment plan to increase production capacity of the aluminium rolling segment was confirmed once again. Optimising the production mix in combination with high productivity resulted in an increase in sales volume in 2024, with a focus on high-tech aluminium products for the rigid packaging and automotive markets. Reduced sales in the flexible packaging segment in the first quarter of the fiscal year affected operational results, which marked a decrease compared to 2023.❞
Panos Lolos, General Manager of ElvalHalcor’s #Copper Segment, stated: ❝The strong operational profitability of the Copper Segment confirms for another year our resilience in the face of changes in the economic environment and challenges in the sectors of construction, automotive and various industrial applications, despite the reduced demand for our related products. During the year, we managed to achieve sales volume growth in specific product categories and to strengthen our market shares in our core products. The main pillars of our efforts are developing innovative products with high added value, optimising our industrial production, and increasing the level of our services.❞
